Hey guys,

So I've made a start at collecting a 40K Iron Warriors Army and I thought it was high time to write a list in order to have an idea of what might be a good list while keeping it as fluffy as I could (to the capacity of my limited CSM Lore knowledge). I tried to go with cultist cannon-fodder to deal with infantry to some degree as well as be cannon fodder. I then though that I needed the Vindicator and Predator Squadrons to deal with tougher targets as well as armour. I put the Warpsmith in the Land Raider with the Mutilators in order to have at least some quality CC going on with my army. I also hope that the (limited) firepower on the Land Raider combined with the benefits of the Dirge Caster will make that a good combination. Finally, I thought that a Mastery Level 3 Sorcerer attached to a squad of 5x Chaos Bikers would make a good Fast Attack choice in order to be mobile damage, psykic support and objective takers.

The Lost and the Damned -- [ 380 Points ] [ Formation from Traitor's Hate ]

Dark Apostle [ 105 Points ]

Chaos Cultists [ 55 Points ]
-- Flamer

Chaos Cultists [ 55 Points ]

Chaos Cultists [ 55 Points ]

Chaos Cultists [ 55 Points ]

Fist of the Gods -- [ 1,185 Points ] [ Formation from Traitor's Hate ]

Warpsmith [ Warlord ] [ 125 Points ]
-- Nest of Mechaserpants

Chaos Vindicator Squadron [ 405 Points ]
-- 2x Additional Chaos Vindicators
-- 3x Siege Shields
-- 3x Combi-Bolters

Chaos Predator Squadron [ 420 Points ]
-- 2x Additional Chaos Predators
-- 3x Twin-Linked Lascannons
-- 3x Lascannon Sponsons

Chaos Landraider [ 235 Points ]
-- Dirge Caster

Unbound Element -- [ 435 Points ]

Sorcerer [ 130 Points ]
-- Mastery Level 3
-- Chaos Bike

Mutilator Squad [ 165 Points ]
-- 2x Additional Mutilators

Chaos Bikers [ 140 Points ]
-- 2x Additional Chaos Bikers
-- 2x Meltaguns
-- Combi-Melta

I Figure that the 'The List and the Damned' could either work well for me or just be a hindrance, meaning that it might be worth getting rid of it in order to turn the 'Unbound Element' into either a 'Chaos Warband' [ See 'Traitor's Hate' ] or simply a CAD.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

All you have to do is split the mutilators into units and you can make a bound list. Mutilators are troop for iron warriors.

(They are still terrible)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Or move one cultist unit into a CAD, to be obsec and guard a home objective.

I'm hoping the advantages of having them ride with my Warlord in a Land Raider w/ Dirge Caster (especially since I'm likely to keep my Vindicators close to said Warlord because of the advantages the Formation offers) might make them more useful.

That might work better.

It always feels like having terminators / mutilators / obliterators in a Land Raider would doesn't it? The performance on the table is typically less than satisfying.

The Land Raider is a very expensive transport option. Consider a Spartan Assault Tank from IA:13 instead, which can get armored ceramite and some more significant weapons. In friendly games, most people will let you do counts as for a regular Land Raider.

Yeah, I think you want to do anything you can to not be unbound with this list. You are going to need every command benefit you can get.

Less than satisfying? Yes, but in my experiences that's because Terminators (and their equivalents) are tricky to use at best.

Definitely looks a lot better, but I get the feeling a 3-Man Mutilator Squad is ill-suited to be transported in such a tank. Perhaps a Chaos Space Marine Squad with as many Marines and upgrades as the remaining points would allow might be better?

Edit: It also means that I would have to re-think the First of the Gods Formation since taking away the normal Chaos Land Raider puts me below the minimum for that Formation in terms of required units.

Fair call.

From a guy that plays a bit of Iron Warriors regularly, I'd say you should probably go one of two routes:

- Play the Grand Company by grabbing a Warband to go with your Fist of the Gods. Lots of ObSec, some rerolling for the blasts on your Vindi's, maybe grabbing an ADL to sit on your backfield with a CSM squad (Fearless in a Fortification).

- Go CAD's. In this case, you remove the Warpsmith tax from Fist of the Gods (The rules aren't great anyways). You can take Oblits or Mut's as troops, getting ObSec for being in a CAD. You also have access to FW stuff, much of which is very fluffy for IW like the Typhon, Rapiers, and Sicarians. If you still want the Lost and the Damned, you can take them as their formation or you can just bring Cultist squads (without the L&D rules, obviously, but adding ObSec).

Either of those would work fairly well. I would also change up your Vindi gear: Combi-Bolter is a must, drop the Seigeshield and grab Demonic Possession and then a dozer blade if you run into a lot of terrain on your tables.
