So I've been looking through the different Traitor Legion tacticas and am really tempted to run one along with my Renegades (Zomb-Tillery), so the question becomes, which one?
(Personally, I run loads of artillery, zombies, and a few deepstriking units to pressure the enemies backfield, 1500pts ITC rules)

Death Guard seem to fit well with zombies and artillery vibe, and if taking terminators, you can comfortably shell them with your earthshakers due to their 2+/FNP and being t5 means they wont get instakilled. Nurgle bikes are always good, and can take on units your artillery might have trouble with. Even the basic boys'n'power armor are hard to shift, making an already difficult to move gunline even more difficult to dislodge.
The biggest difficulty I can see here is the price, nurgle has the most expensive mark and when trying to max artillery as much as possible, it gets hard to balance that.

Alpha Legion seems to be the most thematic, but I have to say after playing Renegades for so long, I really don't like cultists, and AL's kick is cultists. Infiltrating everything also seems problematic in an army that carpets the board. The biggest draw here is being able to melta/plasma multiwound models that artillery cant double out.

I don't have the Traitor Legion book on me (yet), so please, share your thoughts on these and other legions!

Completely with you on the cultist thing. Cultists are Renegades -2.
The price of the Nurgle Marines is actually much cheaper than other marines when you take durability into account. You won't need as many and more will be around in later turns to give greater damage output. Think about it this way - for the price of a renegade or zombie, you are giving a marine GBP, +1 toughness, relentless, fearless and VotLW (although losing 1 initiative). Now on a 5 man squad of CSMs or Chosen, Id say that's worth losing 5 Renegades for.
The other option that could greatly benefit Renegades is WEs for counter assault. FC, Fearless, Rage and VotLW for 2pts... hell yeh! Plus a Juggerlord or 2 with Daemon weapons to roll with the spawn (spawn are always an auto take in my renegade lists).
If you are worried about losing the points to spend on artillery, then termis and bikes will obviously eat that up. You already have access to spawn to grab those objectives and zombies to hold deathstars up.

My main question is how many points you're wanting to spend on allies. That would determine the best legion.

As of now, I chopped my Renegades list down to 797 points.
The Purge
HQ
Ordinance Tyrant Command Squad with Lascannon

Troops
6x10 Plague Zombies

Elites
Medusa Gun
Medusa Gun
2 Quad Launchers
2 Quad Launchers
2 Earthshakers
2 Earthshakers

Fortification
ADL with Quadgun

With additional crew here or there and I don't see many fliers so the quad gun is usually good enough.

So, playing at 1500 that gives me around 703 points to play with

Yeah youre probably right when it comes to MoN, but still, I'm not entirely sure how to best use them besides more shields for the artillery, but I feel I got enough of that. Only thing I can think of is bikes or many raptor talon. I never get to use my termies so I'm always trying to justify them

WE might be a good option, and I do have 30 or so khorne marines so I could field it. You think the three renegade spawn are enough to run a juggerlord with? What about taking a squad or two of chosen? Theyre expensive but are cheaper than berserkers and get more attacks iirc

I trimmed out the spawn for my current list but that being said I will take very little convincing to bring them back in, just move the earthshakers to heavy support.

Bloody autocorrect changing FNP to great British pound!
Aye if you take multiple spawn squads he can always hop between squads when you start losing spawn. I usually find he makes combat.
I do love my chosen, and that was before the legions release so would say go ahead, but I take my chosen for the guns not the extra attack, often run them as havocs instead when allied with my Renegades to save points.
If you aren't wanting to use CSMs as shields and tarpits for your gunline then take a rhino to support the spawn in objective grabbing, especially if wanting to take chosen. If you are taking chosen rather than marines then take the Purge rather than a CAD.

For competitive play, most allies subtract from R&H potency.

For fun I would go with death guard. I've brough nurgle daemons mini drone star along and had good luck.
The problem is that you don't need more tarpits, and no army does tarpits better than R&H. You don't really need back field killy, because artillery. A well rounded Ordnance Tyrant with zombies and spawn covers just about every base. You could go with Thousand Sons and do similar to the LVO list by going Tzeentch, but use magnus instead of fatey with screamerstar.

Its a real shame that you can't bring necrosius in a death guard list. Would be so fun.
