This rule is probably easier to work into Killteam, but it could be fun in regulare 40K as well.

Dismounted: At the end of a phase in which a Bike or Cavalry model is slain, roll a D6 per model slain.
On a 1-3, the rider has been slain and the bike/steed has crashed or fled the battle. The casualty remains removed as normal
On a 4+, the mount has been slain/destroyed but the rider manages to leap and roll to safety. Place an Infantry version of the model with 6" of the survivors, or if the unit was entirely removed place the new model(s) 6" from where the last model was removed.
This counts as a new Infantry unit with number of models equal to the 4+ rolls and has the same standard wargear (minus the bike or mount) as the models slain. Any upgraded wargear is lost

So what do you think?
Obviuosly it would add to the rules bloat, which is why it might be better in KT.

I mean turning bikes into a 20point extra life for all the IC's in my SM codex. That is kinda a bit much as bikes are all ready close to mandatory on them.

Without me my rifle is useless without my rifle I am useless. - Full Metal Jacket Us Marine corp

Same goes for bikers. It is an eminently sensible abstraction to say that regardless of whether the shot killed the bike or the rider the biker is no longer militarily relevant in that battle. It saves some complication that adds nothing to the game really. I can see it only be worth having for hero bikers which admittedly for 40k that is a thing.

A SM biker is far from useless with out their bike. They would still have their power armor and a bolt pistol + all their training up to that point witch is a lot.

Well, yeah. I mean, they should probably be given a Grav gun, when the disembark, because they had that before their bike got blown up, right?

And, if one guy dies, and another's bike is destroyed, that dude could just hop on, and then it would be like you never lost a biker!

I know, we could make it simpler, and just give each biker two wounds, because that's the way it would work on average, right?

And then we could give them all storm shields, because that would just be tits!

And then we could give them a price break, because they're fast, so it would be easier to get them to the battle!

And then we could stop being [deleted] and just play them the way they are!

And then, we could be [deleted] again, and instead make different [deleted] rules!

And then we could all stop doing that, and realize they're probably ok as they are.

This rule is not about balance, it's about fun. This rule is the opposite of streamlining, so I would not be in favor of it for real, but I like it on paper (or in KT only)
To make it balanced, it might come with a 25-50% points increase. So a 20pt biker would end up costing 25-30pts

And remember that upgraded weapons are lost, so a Grav Biker would end up just a Schmoe with a bolter. A Scatterbike would just be a Gaurdian with a Shuriken catapult.

Would work for a longer campaign with a small squad of heroes Id reckon...

You'd have to revert to 2nd ed. where the bike had a cost outside of the unit, or you'd have to bump prices on those with bikes. Personally I like it, but I play 2nd, so that's already a thing.

I also enjoy having tank and vehicle crews able to form little squads when their vehicle gets blown up...but that doesn't really fit into the 7th ed. style of play at all.

Yeah, those fearsome footslogging marines with bolt pistols are all the rage these days. I'm pretty sure the only reason Chronus get's to crawl out of his wrecked tank because that tank is such a pain while he's in it, the enemy deserves the satisfaction of killing him twice.

It is pretty much a free tactical marine with half the firepower that is at least a 7 point model

Here's the thing:
Have you ever seen a bike get wrecked? Just, like, on the highway, not even in a bad collision. It's ugly.

Now imagine that wreck, on rough terrain, on a bike the size of a humvee, that just got blown to smithereens.

Even if someone could reasonably walk away from that if they got very, very lucky, it's not going to happen just any time the mount gets wrecked.

I agree, even if he survives he wouldn't be in conditions to fight a war, so it is perfectly acceptable that he should count as removed from the battle.

People already complain about free models. This gives even more free models.

And imagine chapter master...You somehow manage to kill that 2+/3++/5+++ EW guy and then on 4+ it comes back? Riiiiight. And players complained about carstein's ring bringing back vampires in FB! This is cheaper and can be taken multiple times.

Firstly with most bikers you pay the upgrade of weapons for the rider. the bike doesn´t change its weapons.

Now to throw a proposal back to this type of rule. If the marine biker fails his 4+ roll and is considered to be shot clean off the bike then the killer of the model should be allowed to roll to gain his bike if he is within a certain distance of the biker.

But who is able to ride alien vehicles? orks that ride eldar jetbikes? cadians that ride tomb blades? what about tyranids? Seems quite fun but realistic.
