Subject: The Origins and End of the Cabal?

We know that this little Conspiracy of Ancient Xenos had attempted to influence the outcome of the Heresy via itheir manipulations of John Grammaticus and Primarch(s) of the Alpha Legion..
But did we ever learn anything about how the Cabal was started or formed?
Was this just an association that developed in the Post War in Heaven era? Did any of the aliens in the Cabal have ties to the Old Ones?
And I vaguely recall someone mentioning that Eldrad had said the Cabal had ceased to exist by the time of the War of the Beast.
Were they destroyed? Or did they simply drift apart since the Heresy ended in a negative manner for them?

I like to think that after their Horus Heresy gambit blew up in their faces, the majority of the cabal races offed themselves out of sheer despair.

This "new emperor" business could just be some cabal scheme. The cabal are the sane ones in this story. Its the 40k equivalent of a secret neighbourhood meeting to kick the one idiotic vermin feeding hobo out of the street.

I agree, the cabal seems to be conjured up as an easy plothammer device, although i liked the alpha legion heresy book, the whole cabal idea made no sense, if they knew that chaos was influencing the chapters they could have done something about the accident at the primarch lab or assasinate erebus and Kor Phaeron to stop lorgar going down the wrong path.

Weren't the watchers in the dark affiliated with the cabal? They're still around...and have a purpose...

my biggest question is, is the cabal playing straight or are they playing an all together differant game then their public aim, it could well be that they see three distinct future for the galaxy, one is where humanity and chaos wipe each other out, one is the "enlightened" future the emperor wants (great for humanity bad fior everyone else) the third is a chaos victory ala what actually comes to pass. thus you have 3 compeiting factions, with 3 compeition visions that have been working against one another for milennia in the shadows,

I like to think that the Cabal, in their arrogance, got greedy and took the slightly riskier line that just happened to wipe out Chaos and the upstart Humies in one fell swoop.

yeah thats my feeling too. the cabal basicly got a little too clever. I'd like to see the cabal get broken when a pissed off Omegron realizing all he lost due to their mechaniations decides to deal with them

There are some hints in deliverance lost and other novels featuring him that point in that direction.
