We actually have exile as a punishment?

Not saying they didn't more than earn it. Holy crap. That's some messed-up stuff.

You ever wonder what goes through people's minds when they do these kinds of things? At what point does the thought enter their head and they think "yeah, that's a good life choice"?

I love the "thats not me" plea too...well, if it's not you...why did you go out on two different days and...you know...do the thing?

Dumbasses.

My reaction too. Exile them to Utah! Just like in the good old days.

Apparently their FB was full of Klan related BS. As to their motivations, well, we all want to belong to something, and nothing brings people together like a mutual (irrational) hatred of the other.

28 years? Was anybody physically hurt in this incident?

Obviously these are awful people, but you can literally murder someone and receive a lighter sentence.

This is basically the same thing as burning a cross in someone's yard. Not exactly a minor thing. Plus, pulling a shotgun and threatening people with it?

That eight-year-old's going to need some pretty serious therapy, I would think.

Kayla Norton and Jose Torres, who have three children, were part of a larger group in July 2015 called Respect the Flag. Their convoy of trucks, flying the Confederate battle flag, pulled up to a birthday party for an 8-year-old black child, where they threatened the family and yelled racial slurs. At one point, Torres pulled out a shotgun and pointed it at the family....

Douglas County Assistant District Attorney David Emadi detailed how the group had gone on the drunken rampage through Douglas and Paulding counties on July 24 and July 25, 2015, in pickup trucks laden with Confederate battle flags.

Emadi said the group threatened black motorists, yelled at them and walked up to one of their cars with a gun. They also threatened African-American shoppers at a Paulding County Wal-Mart and at a convenience store.

Pretty extreme stuff. I think they deserve the full sentence, and hopefully this sends a message to other racists.

Maybe send a message to other douchebags that being a douchebag is going to be punished.

Indeed. I am surprised they didn't get shot. I think this is the same crew where one redneck three toother rear ended another Darwin award contestant's pickup, right on camera.

Now, lets remember, there was a time when this kind of crap was common, and worse of course. We are dealing with terrorists and they should be treated as such.

I'll be honest, I hate the Confederate flag, but there's a big difference between displaying it and using it to threaten/harass others. Plenty of people fly it in Colorado, but they don't drive up on an 8 year old's birthday party and point guns at people.

Exactly. This is intimidation and terrorism. Same thing the Klan did for 150 years, just a less violent version of it.

It is like my cousin, who posts how proud he is to be a veteran and all these things about how people should go to prison for disrespecting the American flag. Then turns around and posts pictures of the confederate battle flag and how the south shall rise again. Lolwut?

There's a point where punishment seems excessive, even when it's against people that rightly deserves punishment. Each of those individuals deserves multiple years in prison. I doubt tho that issuing 15/6 to Norton would've served any different the purpose of justice than serving her the 4 or 2 the other ones got. It doesn't sound like she was armed or issued any more death threats than the 2 others we know were convicted.

I don't care for racists gaks one bit, but it is possible to argue that crass and criminal stupidity isn't quite exactly the same as terroristic hatred. And yeah, the difference may be microscopic from the point of view of someone who doesn't hold quite as moronic beliefs as that, but it should somewhat matter in sentencing. Torres had two whole days (holy gak there are stupid cops out there) to pull that trigger, and he didn't. I guess I don't really see what more good it can do to put him behind bars for more than, I don't know, 6-8 years?

Then again, maybe exceptionnally harsh sentencing is necessary given the social tensions in Georgia. Frak do reading these things makes me love Montreal.

I don't know the racial makeup of the county. If it's a largely African-American county then it does make some sense that their being in the county area can be. . . problematic, given these actions

People use such orders similar in UK.
They relocate people to break them from those who support criminal action or views. Your trying to prevent enabling.
Not that jail won t do that.

In this case I can see why judge may consider it.

Yeah I agree, in Georgia 2nd degree murder is 10-30 years. Not sad to see them be put away but the duration seems a bit over the top.

I think they're horrible human beings of the worst caliber, but yeah. 28 years seems extreme for what they did. 10-15 seems more reasonable taking into account a very serious desire to dissuade repeats. This stuff would have been common place in Georgia 50 years ago, so it should be harshly punished to prevent a resurgence but the given sentence seems excessive. EDIT: Then again, I don't think getting mixed into the extremely racist prison culture of the US is going to remotely improve their disposition...

The article I read, she loaded the shot gun and gave it to Jose. So she was a lot more involved than shouting nasty things.

Also, the other two pled out, these two took it to trial. Looks like that was a bad idea!

Yeah, I am sure they were offered a much better plea and thought they could fight it. A good pop after trial is kind of expected. Here in Texas, threatening with a firearm is good for 2-20 (5-99 if shown to be a racial motive) and two different instances mean they could stack (4-40 or 10-life), so not an unreasonable sentence from my POV. You add on the racial threats and general terribleness of the defendants and it looks like probably a really bad idea to try this one.

I agree with Frazzled, they are lucky they didn't get shot.
