This may or may not be an odd question but does anyone have a recommendation on a family friendly or younger audience's version of a "war" game? If there is such a thing
My son who's 8 adores my Warhammer minis. He loves hearing the (pg version) stories of the characters and stuff and asks about their special rules and upgrade options. He constantly makes up his own very simple versions of games with Legos, mini figs and dice.
Is there something I should look into as a very beginner game for a younger audience to get him into a real "war" game style game?
Cheers

One Page Rules might be up your alley. They have a 40K-ish and a Fantasy-ish game, but both are way simplified and therefore should be relatively easy to play with kids. They're intended for GW's minis, but you could totally use them with Lego.

If you have the models allready then what Waspinator types is prolly the cheapest and best option.
However if you have too mutch chash in your account and want something new i recommend Rivet Wars, a board game that plays like a wargame set in ww1 whit chibi style models.

Oh man try Age of Sigmar with just a few minis. The rule sheet would be easy for him to follow withe the Stat wheel, and you can simplify anything necessary on the warscrolls.
My GF's daughters, ages 10 and 13 are currently painting their Skinks and Elves with me. They love it.
congrats!

At that age my kids enjoyed Battlelore. They may need a bit of help understanding some of the lore cards (depending on their reading comprehension level) but mine caught on quickly.
The Songs of Blades and Heroes game is a skirmish game you play with any fogs you have, and would be easy enough for him to handle.
My kids also LOVED (and still LOVE) Wild West gaming, where each player has a figure or a handful (last game with Daughter I think we each had 6 member gangs). I use Fistful Of Lead: Reloaded as a rule set, simple and a TON of fun.

My daughter really got into Gorkamorka.
She also enjoys Frostgrave and Blood Bowl.

Heh. I was going to suggest the same genre and the same reasons, but with Gutshot. One mini, one stat (shooting), some different guns, abilities and actions, and go.

Gutshot is a bit RPG-ish compared to FFoL. Good game, but more complex.

In my games we never got that far. Too much fun shootin' bullets and hittin' the dirt.
