I’ve recently returned to 40k, and I’m wrapping my head around all kinds of new and interesting unit combinations. I’ve seen in some army lists the Archon + Webway Portal + Wrathguard + D-Scythe comb that seems like an extremely powerful unit, and it got me thinking about other combinations.

I’ve started looking at an Autarch Skyrunner + Reavers + Cluster Caltrops, and was wondering if this type of unit had any viability on the tabletop? The Reavers don’t seem great, but I don’t yet understand this 7th-soon-to-be-8th game quite yet.

If you were compelled to take Reavers + Autarch, how would you build them? Would a Farsear skyrunner be better than an Autarch? Would Skyweavers be better? Worse?

Thanks

If your running an Autarch with a Skyrunner and Reavers, don't forget to give him a banshee mask. Nothing says I hate you like a massive melee that your enemy can't stop

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

I've run 6 Reavers w/ 2 Caltrops + Autarch with Lance and Banshhe mask on several occasions pre-Ynnari. It is cheap, hits decently hard and has some good tricks

The lose of FNP really hurts them though. They rarely outright kill the unit they charge (unless it was a small isolated unit that really wasn't worth their time anyway), so retaliation hits were inevitable. And with Hit & Run, you wanted them locked on your turn anyway so they don't get shot at in the opponent's turn, then you Hit & Run.

With basically no armour save, FNP really helped. Buy SfD replaces that. Stubborn from the Reborn host is nice, but I really feel like Ynnari Reavers are way better as minimum units of 3 zipping around as harassment/ Soulburst fuel.

So it comes down to what gear and relics an autarch can take to tank for their reaver squad. Ideally, kitted out reavers with caltrops should kill most of the squad so he shouldn't have to take too many wounds.

Reavers can hit really hard but are not an auto-win unit, they require a bit of thought. I've always got the best from them in units of 6 with duel CC, but if you're running only a single squad then 9 with 3 caltrops might be better. The Autarch would certainly be very helpful with a Banshee mask to nullify incoming Overwatch and tank any return hits so it at least seems like a decent combo but unless you're running duel Warhost your not likely to be able to have multiple squads like this running around.
