I've been using PDF's of the first three Horus Heresy books while collecting models for around a year now, and basically playing mostly test games.
40K is a much stronger scene around here than 30K, but I just find I prefer the setting, the rule system, and models in 30K for the most part.
I also feel strongly that the game is balanced better than 40K, while also making it easier to keep things more narrative and story driven in general.
My question is do you guys think the Age of Darkness and Army list books are worth it if I'm going to try to start a small club up for 30K?
I know that competitive players don't like playing with people who don't own the books, but models cost and this was the only way I could afford to start out. I always intended to go for books as time went on.
Now additionally 8th Edition for 40K is around the corner...I can't seem to find anything on whether or not these books will be updated against a new edition.
So my question is, is now the time to take this plunge?

The 8th ed is the big ?. Without 8th ed sure would be worth it. How 8th ed changes things? Some say 8th ed won't be radically different to 7th ed to invalidate codexes. Others theorize GW will continue selling 7th ed for HH purposes or they release 2 rulesets, one HH compatible, one AOS style light version. I don't believe though GW would keep old edition rules on sale just for HH nor release two versions.
Tough call. How big annoyance losing money if they get invalidated on summer is for you?

Well...for me...I just think investing in models is safer until 8th comes out, but I'm worried that if I go looking for 30K games with people in my area without the books I'll get snubbed (it seems ridiculous, but I have seen people in game stores behaving that way).

Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

I mean, for now you could just make sure you keep downloading the most up to date versions of the books in PDF format, is what im doing currently until i can afford the books, or alternatively buy them as E-books, slightly cheaper than buying the actual books.
it is however not as enjoyable to flick through the book on your tablet / phone as it is the real book though imo

Understandable fear. You could try and if you get problem explain your worry of 8th edition.
I was on the fence myself especially since I don't play with unpainted so it's going to take a while before I get to play anyway and then next 4 weeks I won't be painting either as I'll be in Japan. So the 8th ed could come after mere handful of games...

Fixture of Dakka

Unless 8th edition is a re-write on the level of 3rd edition such that none of the existing Codexes and army lists are useful any more, I don't think a new edition will make too much difference. The Horus heresy army list books have been reprinted, but only because of errata and new units being added, not because of edition changes (the current Elysian Drop Troops army list is written to go along with the 5th edition Codex: Imperial Guard, for example).

That's one way but there's been rumours of more substantial changes.
Also rumours have been on death of codex format like now for 40k(hastings for example has hinted at it) so substantial change that would basically invalidate codexes would be easier to do if you get rid of codexes all together
