Hello,
I play using DA oop models (it's my collection hobby to find and repair old 90s DA models) and I sometimes play them in games with friends. I've recently repair an Apothecary for my Command squad, however the older model I have has a bolt pistol on the Apothecary not a chain sword. I looked in the codex and the Apothecary says it needs to change the weapon for his Narthecium. So can the Apothecary use a bolt pistol and not a chain-sword? If not I play mostly friendly games so I can simply declare he has a chain sword but I would like to know for confusion sake.

I'm a BA player so your DA mileage may vary.
But our Sanguinary Novitiates (command squad apothecaries) start with a bolt pistol, chainsword and narthecium. However they have no access to upgrades ( :( )
I conclude this because in the squad loadout it says...

Power armour
Bolt pistol
Chainsword (Veterans and Sanguinary Novitiate only)
Frag grenades
Krak grenades
Narthecium (Sanguinary Novitiate only)
Power sword and combat shield (Company Champion only)

So that means every model has power armour, bolt pistol and frag&krak grenades, as nowhere does it specify only a few models.
And the Sanguinary Novitiate additionally has a chainsword and narthecium.
The Sanguinary Novitiate cannot take any upgrades [apart from a jump pack, which is a squad wide upgrade] since all upgrades specify a 'Veteran' of whom the Sanguinary Novitiate is not legally speaking (he's a Sanguinary Novitiate).
Which means he cannot replace his bolt pistol or his chainsword with anything, he's stuck the way he is.

Hopefully that helps you understand the way it works and you can apply that to your own codex

Well, if it says he swaps the bolt pistol that's kinda that.

You could always give him grenade duty.
Even if the idea of the squad medic trying to throw grenades at the enemy while patching your guys up is hilarious

Hey my Sanguinary Priest gets to stitch back up a lightning claw to the gut whilst mid duel with a Librarian.

I've always imagined it to be a bit like Payday 2's inspire ability, if you're not familiar with that this 20s video should give you a basic idea

It's all cool. I switched his weapon out for a chain-sword because the pistol was detached anyway... I know it isn't strictly authentic to that model as a collector but the pistol it had poorly attached was plastic anyway so I didn't mind swapping it out for a chainsword.

Nah it's cool. I just wondered if I could use my bolt pistol or not... I'm pretty sure the codex says no so I didn't mind removing it and putting a spare chain sword I had. Was no problem, now I am sure I can use against people I don't know without confusing them.

It's worth checking.
But no ones going to get pissy about a bolt pistol, they're neither here nor there really and it isn't a serious consideration.

For instance my power-fist equipped death company are all modelled with bolt pistols, but they're equipped with bolt guns. No one has ever considered it important or noteworthy when I inform them about this, 1 extra bolt round is insignificant.

Also you could always model one of bop back pack chain weapons or any other one to its webbing or back etc if matters so.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.
