...um... you read it? I mean, GW codecies are pretty poorly organized and all, but it's all in there.

Many of the rules are not expanded on because the main rulebook has those rules. The main rules tell you how to play the game, the codex only tells you how your army adds to those rules
You read a codex from the standpoint that you have a main rulebook to refer back to.

To play 40K, you need a main rulebook and at least 1 codex, then you get the models

All of that is explained in the Warhammer 40k Rulebook.

However, a new edition will likely (rumored) to come out this summer, so you might want to hold off on buying a rule book for a few months.

Check your main rulebook-that'll explain it. If you STILL have questions, then ask us. But we are NOT a replacement for your main rulebook.

Then I'm afraid we can't help. We are not a replacement for actually buying your own copy.

While I can't say it's a bad idea to wait, you're going to have to go into your store and ask to borrow a friend's copy or something.

Higher is better for everything.

For Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill, 2 is awful, 3 is bad, 4 is good, 5 is great, 6 is awesome, 7 is amazing, 8 is outrageous, 9 is godlike, 10 is god. Strength and Toughness are similar, but tend to be lower, ranging from 3 to 6, typically. Initiative is important as it determines who goes first in combat. Wounds and attacks tend to range from 1-4, but there are exceptions for the very best characters and large creatures. Leadership ranges from 6-10. 8 is decent, 9 is good.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

you can get cheap mini rulebooks on ebay. hell I just sold a few from dark vengeance for $20 each which included templates, scatter dice, and a baggie of d6

alternatively you can find quick guides that will have most of the information you need or barring that there are non-legitimate ways to get a rulebook the same way one can get just about any codex in pdf form with a quick google search

Yep that sums it up.

Please feel free to post specific questions once you have a basic grasp of the rules from studying your own copy.
