So I wanted to have an imperial army since it's been a while that I had one and love the concept of deathwatch. (Though I hate that more or less the recommended builds are similar to 5th/6th grey knight psycannon spam builds)
But this is what I own thus far
2x corvus
2x dreads
6x bikes
30x marines
1x watch master
1x Artemis
1x termi cap
I got it all for a pretty alright price and tried playing against tau at 1850 with Black spear strike force and that ended poorly lol. My daemon army which is mono slaanesh and works off either a CAD list with a daemon knight or Daemonic incursion list would of had no problem with the tau list I went against.
TLDR; How the hell do I make this army work and what is it missing?! LOL So use to combat , 2+ invul shenanigans, warp storm table, and first turn charges ( thank you slaanesh warlord trait + seekers)

How is he getting the 2+ Invuln saves exactly? Is he using the Tzeentch Screamstar? If that's the case just toss a Culexes Assassin at it and [Delete] it via overwhelming firepower.

oh no that's my army, and this is normally what I do and it is based off chance too but
I run multiple pyskers that roll on malefic to try and get cursed earth and the heralds in the squad of seekers use the book for a +2.
So with book and cursed earth my seeker squad normally gets 2+ invul unless something doesn't go off. And trust me when I say a culexes Assassin is at the bottom of my list when it comes to worries in fighting.
The reason I stated the daemon thing is that it's what I'm use to using and it feels weird transitioning to deathwatch and trying to get it to work. Automatically Appended Next Post: Granted I will admit I built my daemons to be semi-comp so when tossing a fun deathwatch list at a tau semi comp that had two rip tides, kroots, that new stealth suit, heavy suit with metric ton of shots and interceptor as far as the eye can see I wasn't at all surprised the deathwatch was shot off the board.

Deathwatch play kind of like Grey Knights minus the psychic bit. They can be very flexible at the cost of well "quality over quantity." You tend to feel the effect of something dying. But really you could go in any route you wanted. I'd personally go for a mix of slower units podded in (like Dreads or Termies) and then make everything else mounted (so bikes and Vetsquads in Rhinos). Take all this with a grain of salt. I collected a sizable Deathwatch army, but never really played a full game with it.
Edit: Frag cannons are your friend

Deathwatch work best as allies, even if it's allies with themselves.

Should bring you in around 1400 points, how you fill the rest out is up to you, the model count is low but the unit count is fairly high and very fast, the gameplan is to be able to adapt to more armies by changing deployment and Psychic trees. Still haven't figured out how to trump Wraithknights except kill everything except the Wraithknights then go for objectives but it takes some serious melee power to off a Wraithknight.
Against Tau the Drop Pods give you three flexible arrivals on turn one that can do a great amount of damage, Dreads with Heavy Flamers and a squad of Troops with Special Issue Ammo or three Troops with Special Issue Ammo either forces EWO and gives your Vanguard Vets and Bikers a turn to cross the board or wrecks face in its own right.

How do you feel about Vets with Stalker boltors? I felt fairly impressed with em when I used em, or at the least very much liked the performance for the one turn of shooting before marker light + riptide wreckening happened.

I got nothing against them, one of the biggest issues with Drop Pods is that when the action moves away from them they get left behind, same is true of Marines that arrived via Drop Pod 36" range dropped on your opponent's side of the middle of the field would be hard to hide from.
I prefer a mix of Deathwatch Shotguns and Bolters because I dump my Pods in my opponent's face and they offer amazing firepower.
Still, five Stalkers in one pod and two in the Rhino would be pretty mean.
