Hey everyone,
I've been looking at the old trading website that shall not be named and a bunch of people are listing dreadnoughts as "venerable dreadnoughts" that look like this (the image is my two dreadnoughts before I repaired and repainted them but the ones online look exactly the same):
Am I crazy or are these just normal dreadnoughts? I thought the venerable ones had a little the head of the marine in the middle with like a balcony looking thing below it. Just want to know if these people are wrong or I am crazy. XD

The Venerable Dreadnought rules predate its official model by many years, so people have been using dressed up "regular" dreadnoughts as venerable ones for a long time. Complaining about this is like complaining about someone selling a lascannon marine that predates the new plastic Devastator kit because it's not a "real" Devastator. It's very common to for people to sell models as what they use them as, not what the base model actually is under their paint and conversions.

You're crazy. (Sorry, couldn't resist). There are options. I started building mine this morning with the head and headpiece, then covered it up with the armour viewing slit. Now debating whether I try to paint the head THROUGH the slit.....or eyes, at least.....
That said, my dread (from Death Masque) has four exhaust stacks.... ymmv.
Also... does it MATTER, so long as it's clear what's what?

A "venerable dreadnought" is really just a fancier dreadnought. If this is achieved through a paintjob, more banners and trophies or by purchasing the official model is irrelevant.

Haha, I'm not complaining about people I'm just confused. Although might as well use my models as ven dreadnoughts now. XD

That specific one I'd say they should just call it a Dreadnought, as at no point in history was that model ever advertised as a "Venerable Dreadnought". Doubly so if the person is using the "venerable" title to get more money out of you.
That said. The equally similar looking Bjorn the Fell-Handed/Space Wolves Dreadnought *was* marketed as a Venerable Dreadnought at one point, even though the only two different parts on it was the sarcophagus and one arm. So that specific one gets a pass. This is the one I'm talking about:

That's the only one though, and in terms of pricing I'd still rank it at the same level as the other types of metal dreads.

Ultimately, venerable is more of a title than a model kit, until that one with the helmet came out. I imagine it's people who either don't know what they're talking about or are hoping it can eke them a few dollars more.

Considering FW and GW have put out several venerable kits, I think it's a little misleading. It's like, you could completely legally use a starter set monopose marine sergeant as a captain with bad wargear, but if you're buying a captain model, you're probably looking for a captain model, not a "you could use this as a captain" model.

Yeah, I agree. I have my dreadnoughts and was going to buy a dreadnought ven when I found a good oop one or if my friend paints and sells me his. But on ebay there were just a bunch saying the older were ven dreadnoughts.

Bjorn is still marketed as a venerable dread kit, you can build Murderfang out of the same kit or one of those crazy axe/shield dreads.
Back to the OP someone will fall for it, the best you can do is not be that somebody.

One that most people will not mistake for another one. The old Bjorn however was basically a "headswap" of a standard metal Dreadnought (in fact his catalogue-order form even notes that he uses the same parts as other dreadnoughts of the time), but marketed as a Venerable one. EDIT: And when I said "Was marketed", I didn't mean that the kit was considered a venerable dreadnought by the fanbase. I mean it literally was listed as "Space Wolves Venerable Dreadnought" on the store site. If the dreadnought the OP is refering to is in fact an old METAL space wolves dreadnought (which is literally bjorn with a different name as he was temporarily removed as a playable character during 3rd/4th edition), then the seller is "technically" correct in calling it a venerable dreadnought, even if the model is realistically not that much different than a normal metal dreadnought of the time.

When I said don't be that somebody I was talking about the online ones that are standard Dreads with a bit of extra war trophy left over from other kits.

In context of the thread, I was just pointing out that the metal dread the OP showed can "technically" be marketed as a Venerable Dreadnought if it was that specific Space Wolves one, as it *was* at one point marketed as a "Venerable Dreadnought" on the GW website.
In that case, it might not be the person trying to gouge money, but legitimately thought it would be named as such because the product he bought at one point was called "Venerable Dreadnought".
Here's a link to the WayBack Machine archive of the old store with that name:
