So I have a thousand sons/daemons army that I am building, I am seeing that pink horrors are a really good unit to summob due to the split rule. Are there any Daemon players/ chaos summoning players out there able to tell me a safe amount of horrors I need?

Of just pink horrors? Or is that Blue+brimstone+pink horrors?

Of pink, then you would need an appropriate number of the others not necessarily, enough per model of pink

But enough for a squad or two of the previous to be wiped

But Really that was a troll..

What you would need is about 30 pinks (plus 10/20 for their detachment if you are taking a daemon detachment), then some Heralds then some bigger things

I'm not gonna be playing with 21 heralds and a couple horrors. I just want an option to get more models on the table to help my sons out.

Just count it. If you want a squad of 11 pinks (this way you get 2 wc) you also need 22 blues and 22 brimstones. Or 44 blues and 88 brimstones or something like that if you're running a creation locus herald with them.

But that's worst case scenario cause noone would bother shooting your horrors outside of rare cases of needing to get through bauble wrap no matter what. They'll just usually get wiped in mellee - they don't get to split if the squad's completely destroyed due to instability tests.

I suggest 20 Pink Horrors just for summoning (it's not worth buying them in your army), 30-40 Blues and 20-30 of Brimstones. Generally your list is just going to be 2-3 squads of 11x Blue Horrors so the Pink and the Brimstones are just their for the summoning and splitting. And frankly you don't split a lot because most don't have want to shoot at horrors that duplicate when they take damage. But also you'll generally lose some of each kind of horror so you don't actually use all of your horrors at once.

You do not need enough horrors to split for the amount of pink horrors you run with, the chances of splitting happening so perfectly you don't miss out on any are pretty low. Go with however many pink horrors you feel is best then maybe get half or so of that (if you get 20 pinks, I'd say go 20 blues and brimstones as well however) in blues and brimstones if you want to split.

Technically, you don't have to buy any "Pink" horrors unless you really enough T3 models that are too big for the scale (i.e as big as Space Marines).
The "Blue" Horrors are actually the same size as the old metal Pinks (which are still valid models to use)

I would (and did) just buy boxes on Blue/Brims and paint some of the Blues pink. Done.
I also painted some of my Brims blue and some Pink, like they are trying to imitate their big bros. And a few brims can be cut and based 1 Brim per base and no one will notice,

Using only 2 boxes + 5 blues from the Chariot set I currently have:
9 Pinks
16 Blues
18 Brims painted yellow/orange
2 Brims painted Pink
4 Brims painted Blue

With that I can field:
11 Pinks (using the 2 extra pink Brims) with more than enough Blues as they die
-Or-
2 x 11 Blues (using the 4 blue Brims and 2 pink Brims) with more than enough Brims.

I highly recommend just getting 2 boxes of Blue/Brims to start and paint some Pink. Then go from there if you decide you want more.

My plan is to have 33 Pinks eventually. And 66 blue/brimstone horrors.

This way I can run two units of 16 or three units of 11 and have enough models to split. I might consider getting more blues/brims for the creation herald but I'm not so sure. I played a game yesterday where 11 pink horrors became 44 blues all of the sudden, my opponent had a fun time slogging through all of that to get to an objective.

Although I charged the unit of brimstones into the same fight as my Lord of Change and due to daemonic instability I ended up losing him with full wounds (+1 wound from greater reward..I was sad :()

Paint 33 of them Pink and the other 56 of them Blue. Then paint about 10+ Brims blue. You will never play every single split model, so having exactly enough to split is a waste of model

Even with the Locus of Creation you won't be over 90 Brims in 1 game since the Herald has to be in the unit that splits and if an attack can kill its whole unit, it will probably kill the Herald too.

That's really helpful and I may do this. I do already have two units of 10 pink horrors though so I figured if I bought another box and then maybe found a way to buy 3 more individual pinks that would have me set.

I noticed that as well with the locus of creation - my herald in that unit got wiped with the rest of them. I do love the split rule - it's fun to watch a small unit become a huge unit. Even if it's not too difficult to remove it still takes some focusing to root out.

You don't need 3 additional Pinks, just paint 3 Brimstone Horrors like Pink fire and mix them into the unit. It not only works as filler, but gives the unit character too. Like the little fire imps are trying to imitate the 'big boys'. It works for Nurglings, why not Brimstones?

As a 1k sons player who ended up getting daemons before splitting became a thing, I got 54 pinks (somehow got an extra 4 from somewhere, need 1 more...). Normally I roll out with the Tzeentch formation with 3 units of 11, 3 flamers, and 3 exalted flamers. This gives me enough pinks for 2 summons if needed (and trust me, if going pure TzDaemons you really don't need to summon nowadays, splits are enough).

With splitting added I ended up getting 4 boxes of blues and brims since I already had 13 blue horrors from chariot boxes. This gave me 53 blues which is enough to run 33 in the formation with the blue scribes while having 20 for splitting purposes. 20 blues is a good number though I now have 40 extras (gaming group got me 2 boxes as a gift). And there is no way you will ever use up 60 blues and brims in a game since no one really wants to shoot at them and they don't die as fast as you'd expect with 5++ reroll 1s or 4++.

If you're just summoning in pinks, I'd probably just get 20 pink horrors and 30 blues/brims. By the time you use up all your blues, the game is probably over anyhow. If you're making a Daemon army, you'd probably need more.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I am going to try to build my way up to 30 pinks, 60 blues, 60 brimstones. It's going to be a major project but I think it will payoff in the end!
