Subject: Why is the Crimson Slaughter getting so much attention?
|

Been Around the Block
|
I have been interested in the Warhammer 40k game for some time now and I started collecting last year, and out of all the armies, my personal favorite is the Chaos Space Marines. But one question that has been on my mind is why GW is giving the Crimson Slaughter so much attention? It baffles me how this minor renegade chapter has gotten their own codex-supplement over the other main Legions, plus they replaced the Black Legion as the box art representations of their army, Which is kinda stupid because the reason why the Black Legion were the mascots in the first place was because they are the basic core of what a Chaos marine army is, If haven't you read the Crimson Slaughter's fluff they could be mistaken for a Khorne-worshipping legion. Speaking of which when I first saw a picture of them I thought they were a World Eater army, as their color scheme is very similar (only that the Crimson Slaughter's red part is lighter). I honestly have no idea why these guys have been getting attention while leaving the other, more cooler legions are left without their own supplement.

Its the reboot of the Word Bearers for a younger, hipper crowd. Religious Chaos is out and Crazy Chaos is in. Its a classic GW market strategy.

Soo...they're hipster Word Bearers?
I don't think the universe can handle that much heresy.

You're getting it all wrong. People these days don't the patience they used to. Who can stand reading all those boring Horus Heresy books? That's why GW made the Crimson Slaughter. Its everything you love about the Word Bearers but with a paragraph's worth of ham-fisted lore.

It's all forgiven and forgotten. They gave us a supplement for legions, are giving us new models for Thousand Sons and Deathguard, daemon primarchs and to top it all of, Crimson Slaughter got their gak kicked in lorewise in traitor's Hate.
I just hope they let CS go the way of the dodo. They even have an excuse in the fluff or relegate them into a renegade supplement or so.

That's better than a dozen novels of ham-fisted lore.
I don't see how they're like Word Bearers, other than being red?
The Word Bearers turned to Chaos willingly. The Crimson Slaughter were victims of a curse. They fell unwittingly until it was too late, and by the time they chose damnation it was far too late for any other choice.
If they have to be compared to a traitor legion, it'd be Death Guard.

I think the purpose of the Crimson Slaughter was mainly to show.. that Chaos Spacemarines are not just the legions..
Sure there was the Red Corsairs.. but for some reason GW didn't use them... Maybe because they were technically a FW force as their Fluff is about when they were still Astral Claws, and decided to Succeed the imperium and became corrupt.

There were also the Steel Cobras, Sons of Malice, The Flawless Host, and the Purged.
All of them would have made a more interesting focus.

Honestly the hate is because they didn't do Legions as a supplement first. Yeah you had Black Legion but it was garbage. Crimson Slaughter was a breath of fresh air for a seemingly overall terrible codex.
Then you have the whiners going on about Word Beaerers and World Eaters. I understand that frustration but it isn't like the fluff is that terrible for the Crimson Slaughter. Just they kinda appeared out of nowhere...

There were no drugs, only some Daemonettes, Abaddon went through a rough break up. It got dark man.

Using Object Source Lighting

They wanted a black and red and metallic force, but remembered the world eaters and the word bearers, so they made them be a young renegade chapter. ...But forgot they'd already made the red corsairs.
Or maybe it was someone's pet project they pushed too hard. Honestly, if it wasn't, I don't understand why they'd possibly think it was a better idea than making a RC expansion.
Anything gained by a slightly different army is IMHO lost by the degree to which they muddied the existing IP and didn't give existing fans something new.

Actually, that would have made more sense than CS lol. As a supplement to the BL supplement XD.
Except they would be the tormented and could take VotLW. As opposed to some random new renegade chapter that came out of nowhere, kicking all kinds of ass.
