I... actually don't know. Help?

I've been thinking of making an army using pretty much only grot models, based around plenty of Grot tanks converted from 1/72 and certain 1/35 scale model tanks. The warboss would be a dreadnought scavenged and controlled by several gretchin (such as two controlling an arm with sticks) and bikers being either grots on scooters or wolves. Any other ideas for units I can substitute with gretchin?

You could also run a Big Mek as a Gretchin-piloted "Dred"

Killa Kans comes to mind, You could also make a Dreadnought that's piloted by multiple grots (explaining why they would be bad at shooting but better at krumpin')

You can also make Mega-Armored Grots and use them as 'Eavy Armor Orks.

I run a full grot army in 40K. All the vehicles can have their pilots subsituted by grots, and exo-suits will fix quite a few coeex entries. Check my blog (the squeaky waagh, link in sig) for inspiration!

Been piecemeal building a counts-as Tau force that's all grots.
So far I'm mostly done with one Riptide and partially done with another Riptide and Stormsurge.
Grots can loot anything.

I was kind of surprised to see you don't have grot tanks or grot mega tanks in your gallery. They are pretty scary units run purely by grots.

I often thought about using the IG/AM codex to run an all grot army. I think it would be fun, but would require a lot of converting.

Out of my Mind

While it's not a true Grot army, I do run them pretty heavy. My 'Grot' Army consists of:

120 Grots
18 Kans
2 Dreads
1 Morkanaut
2 SAGs

The Kanz are Grot based. The SAG's could easily be modeled as a Weapon Team with Grots. Runtherdz are easy to convert Grots on top of Squigs. The Dreads/Morkanauts have already been discussed above. While I don't have any, Mek Gunz are also Grot based. I'm currently filling up all 6 of my Heavy Support slots on a Dual CAD to get the above, so that's why I haven't gotten any, but they'd compliment the army really well. The flyers also have a Grot Gunner upgrade which is also at your disposal.

Current Armies
40k: 15k of Unplayable Necrons
(I miss 7th!)
30k: Imperial Fists
(project for 2025)

Okay, do you have any suggestions for tanks that look suitably orky? That I'd buy in 1/72 scale that is

FW is frowned upon where I play. They're on my list, but haven't been a priority over playable units.

Use 1/35 th, keep the tracks, rebuild the top. At 1/72nd, the tracks are fiddly compared to 40K models. As for tanks: the panther F is nice and rugged, and I have a soft spot for the Whippet tank (a WWI model). The Churchill mk. III also offers a nice platform to build upon.

You could use a weirdboy in the army, and put a Grot on a harness above his exposed brain, poking his brain with a stick or knife or something. Make it look like he's piloting the weirdboy's brain. Greenstuff a tiny bead of drool on the Weirdboy's mouth for that extra touch.

They do, but a grot tank is very small compared to any other 40k tank. Not that I still wouldn't suggest grot tanks and a grot mega tank in a grot list.

1/35 is too big. They're bigger than normal 40K tanks! Only models like the M3 Stuart or the 7TP would be even close to small enough but they're still too big.

I tend to biggerize all my tanks, so I may be biased

Strap little missiles, or mortar rounds to their backs and launch them with catapults, or big lobba's.

Killa Kan's built out of terminator, mega armor, and Dredds. You should use and abundance of KIlla Kans.

GW/ Forgeworld used to have a grot flying a missile, get a couple of those old school Russian MIG models, and strap in a couple of grot flyers, with over the top load outs of missiles and bombs strapped to the wings, top and bottom.

Stolen IQ tank, and built up heavy weapons teams.
Maybe use a 60mm base, with a batch of snotlings, and some grots with a Millie Launcher perched on a box, and on the grots shoulders, as one of the snotlings is being stuffed into the front, while someone is loading a round into the back.

Shooty Grots-, use the axes, and shoota options, with two grots on a shoota, one aiming and fire, the other holding it on their shoulder/ back. additionally, you can stack the grots on a heavy shoota/ stubba option, as well.

Shock attack Gun, with the grots and snotlings stuffing an Ork into the business end and firing it. Leg of an ork sticking out of the hose, while a few heads and arms and legs and half of a freaked out ork modeled to the firing port of the gun.

Big Gunz, and lots of them.

Assault jump packs strapped to Grots, while other grots are riding on the back of the jump packs, and perched sitting on the top.

Get some Admech robots, servitors, and borgs, and have the grots defiling them, and adding other weird stuff in a mimic of the Admechs, and Meks. (Ork Weapons, oversized robot heads, Space Marine helmets, oversized limbs, etc...)

Orks and Humans strapped to bombz, with a few grots with a grot sticks, prodding them forward, in a strange mutated idea of penal troops.

!@#$, man- The whole concept sounds like a lot of fun, just for the modeling opportunity alone!

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I'm really liking the Shooty Grots idea - Maybe have one standing on the others shoulders to get the height required?
I want the army to be mostly mechanized, based around Grot Tanks and artillery. Grot tanks will be scartchbuilt and converted from various scale models - I've got 2 soviet ISU-122 which only need a turret and some buffing up. Artillery could be made from pipes, pencils and other tubular things.

If you can work out a way to model a grot standing/sitting on another's shoulders, this solves a lot of issues re height (thus avoiding line of sight arguments etc) for counts-as-orks, and would look pretty cool. Although fluff-wise, it makes more sense for non-close-combat models.

Exo-suits are another option, perhaps easier to model, and quite fluffy - naturally grots trying to emulate orks would build stuff to make themselves bigger and stronger and tougher.

If you need grots standing on each other's shoulders, the WHFB gnoblar set had a pair of those.
