I am attending an event tomorrow. One of the games we will be playing will have the secondary objective "last man standing".

I run an orbital assault rite of war army and I have always played against opponents who count the drop pod as a kill point separate to the unit it was carrying. Am I right to say then that drop pods would count as a surviving unit, seperate to the unit it was carrying, for the last man standing objective?. I have never been in the situation that I would need to make sure, but thought I would ask before tomorrow.

My red book is not in front of me mate. What does the Last Man Standing rule state?

30k:
Solar Auxilia: 3,500+
Space Wolves: 1,000+
40k:
Vostroyans: 2,000+
Deathwatch: Points Unknown.

It's the inverse of attrition: the side with the greatest number of surviving units gets a secondary objective.

And a drop pod is a separate unit for all purposes, so would count unless the rule either specifies scoring units or disallows immobilized ones, which I don't believe it does.

As long as rules don't specify scoring units or non-immobile yes. Your opponents have been playing it right but here it works for your advantage.
