Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get back into 40k and rebuilding my Dark Angels army. My local Warhammer store has a deal that will let me get double the Dark Angels models in exchange for the Chaos figs if I buy a copy of Dark Vengeance from them. It's tempting, but I don't know what kind of army I'll want to build once the new edition hits and I kinda want more variety in my minis than the snap-together figs will offer. On the other hand, it's six squads for $130.

Any thoughts?

they are all on the old bases, so keep that in mind if you are looking for tac marines. otherwise they are very nice sculpts of dark angel specifics. 2 troops, 2 elites, and 2 fast attack are nice to start with tbh.

avoiding the lorax on Crion

One packbof gw urban terrain bases in 32mm is about either 36 or 48 a pack so that could base everything easily on 32mm if you like.

Have to check but I believe its 4 spruses of 12.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

space marines where upsized to 32mm. truthfully it's better that way, I no longer have to glue a penny under my assault marines to keep them standing. marines are still fine on the old bases offically, but with the new edition there is rumors of standardized bases for matched play so.. could be an issue if you wanna play tournies etc

I bought the DV set recently and traded my Chaos for DA. It's just about the cheapest way to do things. Extra squads of TAC marines, bikes and termies are $15 each on eBay, making DA one of, if not the most, cost effective ways to get going.

Vigo. Spain.

The models of Dark Vengeance are wonderfull, and you can sell the ones you don't want repeated (The Chapter Master and the Librarian) on Ebay to recover some quids.

The mono pose of the Tactical Squad is a no problem really. In the Terminators maybe is more obvious, but with a slighlty different paintjob or just a minimal conversion it can be very easy fixed.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

You don't even really need to sell the extra models; extra librarians are always nice and the company master is awesome conversion fodder for other characters (like maybe a third librarian or an interrogator chaplain).

If someone's willing to take the chaos figs, I would definitely go for the deal. I would be loading up on them to build my own Dark Angels company if it wasn't for the fact that the chaos models get in the way (and I have a chaos army!).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

The sculpts on the DV minis is nice even if they are monopose. I've seen plenty of conversions with these models as the base, so there's room for some variety. I would definitely think about getting the set even with 8th about to drop.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I can't speak for the imperial side, but GW never released the chosen models on their own and given the mono poses and weapon load out, they can't exactly repackage them for 8th either. So in that sense, the box is still worth it for csm, you just might have to convert the odd model if you don't like the load out.

As far as conversions go I've converted nearly every model in my army from the DV set using bits from different kits. For example, I have four regular bike squads of three marines each with either two grav guns or two meltaguns in each squad, and the only model out of those I haven't replaced from the torso up is one of the sergeants. I also have a squad of 6 Black Knights based on DV bikes.

Sure, the models are still good, just toss the rulebook and the templates
