Planescape: Torment. I recall having good luck with it running out of a Windows VM on my Linux box. It's infinity engine based though, so it'd probably run in WINE well enough.

Which again makes me wonder why you think Microsoft is advertising third party applications in the start menu, as opposed to your dad just having some kind of drive-by malware or something else creating the ads?
When I came to visit him I got frequent on screen notifications of changes, one of the notifications appears to be advertising of third party software, in the Start menu.
Because I've been using Windows 10 since beta (I have a Vive and some apps use DX12) and I've never seen this behavior.
Ashiraya wrote:I still use Windows 7. Refused to upgrade to 10.

DirectX12 only runs on Windows 10. So far as I can tell there isn't any other reason, and Windows 7 is just about better in every way.

I have windows 10 on my work computer. I also got whatever the feth the new MS Excel is. I hates it. Hey process engineer, remember when you could make a simple time series graph and then copy it, changing 3 little letters and clone it for all 25 variables you have? Yeah? Did that make trouble shooting easy and convenient? Well feth you with a dead man's dick. You now have to do 15 steps per graph and then 1/2 of a Hokey Pokey. I just clean up my data in excel and toss it in MiniTab now. fething excel. I've used it nearly every day since 1997 and this is the worst incarnation in tarnation.

Incidentally, I think Office 97 is about where the suite peaked.

There are definitely ad-like things on the Windows 10 upgrade version. Though they're cloaked in other terms.
However, they can be turned off, if you're savvy enough. They're usually things like: "Hey, here's a suggested app, Candy Crush saga, only 11ty Billion pounds" on your start menu. Or on the "Life at a glance" and "Play and explore" also have ads that you can unpin. These include various stuff like, "Play Minecraft Windows 10 edition" or "Get an XBOX Live Gold subscription for lots of moneys!" Fortunately, you can 'unpin from startmenu' these. - I have no idea if this then means that new things will turn up though.

Because they were removed internally through options in the OS (that were not there before).

Fair enough.
FWIW I also use Classic Shell and I think it's a must-have.

I use Win7 for work and use Office 2013.
I echo kronk... feth Excel.
I simply just use Crystal Reports for graphing and AccessDB for data manipulation.

I don't recall mention of advertising when Win 10 was promoted, so it's not reasonable to put it in because it's 'free' when attention wasn't draw to the feature in its strong promotion.
I didn't bother with the upgrade myself, my computer works fine and changing operating systems on machines not originally built for them is just asking for problems in my experience.

I dont think I should, it might confuse things further for my old man.
And it isn't worth it as a swappable interface because its better for me to get used to vanilla Win 10 as I dont have hands on elsewhere, and certainly dont want it at home.

I dunno. I sprung for the Windows 10 free upgrade (after like 8 months of telling them to feth off- the tipping point was that I got a new video card and the latest drivers required Win 10). My start menu doesn't look too bad. It's pretty easy to remove all the junk.
