So with 8th edition allowing to shoot pistols while in close combat, do you think that plasma pistol that comes with every imperial hero unit might finally be good?

Yeah, I think we will see a lot of flamer and plasma pistols in 8th. Depends on the point cost though.

Plasma Pistols are a long way behind the useful, they'd wanna get a goodly price cut to outweigh that risk to user nonsense.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Plasma pistols? Yes. Going to be really good i think. As a genestealer cult player however im more stoked for the possibilities of the hand flamer........

honestly I'd like to see "Gets hot" go away. or simpyl be a "the weapon is unuseable for 1d6 rounds"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

That actually sounds entertaining. Irritating in the extreme but entertaining.

One of the biggest problems with plasma pistols (and special pistols in general) was that you were only likely to shoot it once a game. Maybe twice if you were lucky, never if you were not. Being able to shoot it while in CC goes a long way to justifying it’s points.

That change alone moves them from “Never take” to “I think it looks cool, why not.” I’m not sure they are going to make it up to “Must have”, but they are moving up. How efficient/efficient they are depends entirely on points and the rest of the new rules.

I think for guard plasmapistols will be awesome if they are costed properly (based on the post saying marine 13 pistol 7 they are). Especially for models with bad cc stats and okay to good shooting they might be worth as cc deterrents.

On a one wound model there's still a good chance you'll only get to shoot it once and it's not like Perils of the Warp where it still goes off, gets hot is a fail to hit roll.

Plasmapistols, inferno pistols and hand flamers for everyone!

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

I'd love to model characters with plasma pistols, the problem is if they're competing with the new improved combi weapons they'll have to be priced accordingly. It would be a shame if the plasma pistol finally becomes good but the combi-melta becomes so much better they aren't seen

Fingers crossed GW have considered that

We already know they have. While they may not be better in punching power, we know for a fact that if you have the pistols, you can shoot out of close combat with pistols. While that might be situational, it's still a really cool strategy to have in your back pocket.

imperial Guard officers and Space Marine Assault Squad sergeants don't generally get combi-weapons, do they?

Depends on how the specific rules are actually written..............................

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

You're also assuming that Plasma Pistols will retain their current profile. They might end up with lower strength and likely won't be -4 or -5 armor save, they might go to -3 or -2

If they go with a simpler wound allocation system, the odds of the guy getting singled out and killed are lower. And GW seems to be on a big re-roll kick. Even re-rolling 1s will eliminate gets hot (assuming it stays).

Still a lot of balls in the air to see how things are going to fall out, but I’m optimistic. Probably the best time for plasma pistols since 3rd ed, where I could give 2 to a 5 man assault squad for 5ppm. And if they didn’t move, they could double tap.
