The warm yellow on the mini and the yellow in the basing work well with the cool metallic color.

Thanks dave, I like the metal and yellow look, and the bases would be perfect if I could add some cactii to them.

kestral wrote:Look good! I prefer ghar infantry, but the yellow and steel look you've got going there is very nice.

, I haven't seen any of the Ghar infantry close up, but I'll be getting some hopefully this week. Both will be the freebies from warlord from ordering the Chryseis shard and Xilos campaign books.

Well I've done it . I've corrupted my son and he has played his first (also my first) game of Beyond the Gates of Antares .

I wrangled him into playing the game and quickly threw out basic terrain on the table. I didn't want him to get bored waiting.

He chose to play the Ghar after I said how hard they are to shoot up. You can see the entire force was painted and I scratch built most of a unit of flutters. They still need wings.

I of course got the Concord blokes.

Points were not counted and we just went to kill each other without any objectives. Zack quickly killed my light support drone and I kept plugging away at one unit of battle Ghar until it fell victim to the below 50% rule and had too many pins. I then shot up another unit until it was almost pinned out but was definitely down. Game went seven turns and if we went by points then I'd have won.

Take away from the game. Lots of terrain needed or shootings going to be king. Ghar must spend 20 points on flitters to drop the crazy effect dice on them instead of their suits.

Nice job corrupting the youth. Was this basically the contents of the starter box? How hard would you say the game is to pick up and learn?

I really like your silver/yellow Ghar scheme, it looks cool. Basically like they have rolled out of the factory and the yellow has been painted to add some character to them.

Good job getting a game in with Zack as well, those Ghar suits are difficult to take down with the Concord side of the starter, were you basically dependent upon the CDC1(?!? may be wrong name) drones and plasma?

Basically it was the entire starter box, 3 sprues of Ghar I bought in their sprues sale a few weeks back (or one box of Ghar battle squad/3 models) and the 4 flitters I made from the spare suit heads, some plastic tubing and guitar strings. Very easy to pick up game. I basically was hooked by watching these guys videos.

They are learning the game as well with their series, but play bolt action which is very similar, only using D6's instead of BtGoA using D10's.
Also warlordgames has their learn to play videos which were helpful.

They are mostly grimmer up, but I think their leader has a penchant for the yellow .

The Ghar are notoriously hard to kill, and my son did a great job of rolling saves. The plasma lance guns were the only things that really gave me a shot at killing these beasts, otherwise I needed to hit and him roll a 10 on a D10 to fail his resolution tests. The plasma lance drops them down to an 8.

I think Zack would have had it if he was more aggressive, but he'll learn.

Spent 8+ hours of vacation destroying and rejigging the basement. Very productive day. My workspace is cleaned up and moved to the far side of the basement. The only problem is no carpet under my desk chair and I'm on a slope so every now and then I'm rolling downhill .

Took a break to take the girls to volleyball camp and stopped by the dollar store. $2.17 later I had two bags of white rocks and white sand both which are purposes for floral vases.....me I made snow covered terrain.

I probably have another few days or reorganizing all the things (my gaming stuff), but the kids play area has doubled in size and is now organized into a tv/wii section and a big open area to pour out all the lego or craft things.

In the rearranging I found a 50pack of blank CDs, so guess who will be making more terrain .

Oh yes, he is a proficient zombie killer . He is very fun of playing the shooty survivor while dad plays the raging lunatic that goes headlong into the fray.

dsteingass wrote:Looks like a great first game! I can see terrain mattering, looks fun! I think you've got some motivation to finish that growing collection of yours!

Beyond the Gates of Antares is a really fun game. You need tons of terrain to get the feel though as most personal weapons have an effective range of 20", a long range (-1 to hit) of 30", and extreme ranges that reach across the field. Open killzones are bad.

So speaking of terrain...

Started painting my outpost I made a few weeks back.

Some light cover from floral bits.

Cake stand temple from pieces relocated in the move.

Dust tactics tank traps

A different color of sand to represent quicksand. Maybe I should add some zombie arms coming out of the sand.

And another attempt at a wood base using different items for the tree.

Still waiting on my BtGoA order from Warlordgames.com. It shipped last Friday, but we will see how it goes.

Thanks Red, yellowish tree things are from a floral/hobby shop, well an old bouquet that has gotten new life. I saw many things like it at the floral part of hobby lobby for anywhere from $2-20 a bunch. Each bunch would have about 10-15 of these sprigs on them. The problem I was having is mounting them to a CD, which is why these were mounted to a small piece of VCT(vinyl commercial tile) which is $0.66 for a 1'x1' square. I just drilled holes in the tile the size of the sprig, added a drop of superglue and jammed them in. Easy peasey lemon squeezey

My order from warlord arrived yesterday and ninja' it's way down to the new work space. It's missing the free LT. Spiers model that should of been sent with it, so I've sent Warlord an email. The books look fantastic, and the two Ghar freebies I got form ordering direct from Warlord are glued to bases already and I've assembled a 5 man team of the Algoryn troopers. Very nice models indeed . I didn't snap a pic yet, but I'll do so in an hour or five when I wake up. They seem to be taller than a marine, which is cool since they are an alien race that is roughly humanoid.

On the warlord Front, they have a special alien mercenary Togg figure available this weekend only, so I might have to order him since he is otherwise an event only model.

I love ultra muscled neck of that guy , or armored chitin, or whatever it's supposed to be. His rules are on their site and he's a pretty big bad . Great accuracy, better than average weapon, and a whirlwind grenade that creates a vortex like area of destruction.

Well the dryer died last night so I got up early and I'm at a laundrymat finishing my laundry. Before I left I snapped a couple scale pics of the BtGoA figs.

Ghar, Concord, Space Marine and Algoryn

Marine (not really close enough for scale) Algoryn and Concord just to show size difference between the two factions.

Edit: more outpost pics for Azazelx,

Roof top

All 4 sides are the same, with the fortress buttresses upside down. Gives space for future spotlights or weapon mounts. One side does have a ladder inside which goes up to the opening on the to. Two algoryn are taking up firing position inside the building. Just basecoats on it currently.

Oh and Ghar freebies

Algoryn squad leader telling them "you must be this tall to fight us "

Started painting the java joint (name still in the works) this morning, still not far enough for pics, but since I built it in my old thread here's pics of the building in question.

I see some rare Mordheim bitz there too! Although, I'm not sure how those stones mix with the 1890s look of the DUST stones, but I dunno, paint has the power to bring things together.

Well, it's only a few pieces from DUST, the door on the back of the building is from their Quonset huts, and the menu board is part of a connecting wall. The rest is plastic card and old Mordheim building bits.

I really like the Algoryn style, BtGoA is really pumping out good stuff. I didn't like the concept work in the beginning because it seamed trite, but it is all coming together thematically.

Togg was ordered last night, comes to about $13 with shipping and exchange rate. Hopefully I'll see him in a couple weeks.

In the mean time I had 3 uninterrupted hours of painting and watching Arrow on Netflix, so the first squad of Algoryn are done.

I guess that's putting me in a good spot for the monthly challenge . 3 troopers with mag guns, a trooper with a micro-x launcher, a squad leader with Mag pistol and x-sling and a spotter drone. Drone still needs basing, but I'll do all three of them at one time as they could possibly be part of their own unit.

Nice, classic, take on the Algoryn there. I only ever had the metal Algoryn troopers, how did you find the plastics to work with?

Also any plans to get some of the awesome, if somewhat expensive, Algoryn skimmers?

Thanks , I though about other colors for them, especially Purple, but just went with the standard red and black. They might get some white/bone markings on their armor in the future though.

I've been looking at ALL the factions and expanding my collection, but until I get a new job my funds are not going to allow me to buy the big ticket items. Also the Boromites and other armies are waiting for plastic releases. Tanks and skimmers will also wait as I enjoyed games without big vehicles for a long time (2nd edition 40k).

The Algoryn plastics were easy to work with, but like the Concord there are matching arm sets for the guns. Not as much versatility as a GW kit, but still seperate head, arms, leg sets and front and back chest parts. Enough variety for a good sized force. Also between the 3algoryn squads I'll have different specialist weapons and squad leader weapons, all included in the set. The only thing I didn't like was the heads fit strangely with their masks getting in the way of the armor. It makes positioning the head difficult to line up with gun levels for aiming.

Another difference I noted inthe Kar'A nine set was that the dice for the Concord were different. Different shade of green and different color for the wording. Still easy enough to tell green dice from maroon dice from grey dice, but one of my OCD issues.

If anyone is starting out with the game I'd probably suggest getting the Kar'A nine set as it has a basic get started rulebook, two more equal forces and all the templates, dice and pin markers you'd need. Buying 2 would be better for larger games, but one set would be fine.

Thanks Azazelx, the red is from shadows of brimstone paint set I got on clearance from Miniaturemarket a while back. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore , so I just shot armypainter an email asking if they just rebranded a color (chaotic red looked closest), or if they have them seperate. I couldn't find it on their website, but the search feature was not working.

I basecoated 3 more Algoryn and two more drones today before leaving to check out the other FLGS which stocks all the armypainter stuff.

Also got cash for my birthday from my parents , so now the planning must begin on how to spend it.

1. Zombicide green horde, I put in $1, but I think my total would be like $175 if I got the things I want. Though I might just skip it totally as I enjoy the contemporary version more. There are some good sculpts, but a majority of the stretch goals were meh to me.

2. More gates of Antares. This is the front runner right now, the question is do I bulk out one force or get a mix of all the things?

3. Supply haul. I need to replenish some stuff, and now that there is room in the basement I could really deck the place out, or at least make things nicer.

4. Any suggestions?

The answer is clear to me. 40k 8th Edition starter box set.

More seriously though - as far as tools, materiel, etc goes - if you need something, I'd always heartily say to go ahead and get it, but also avoid buying things "just because." So lamp(s) with Daylight bulbs, restock of needed stuff, etc, shelving, etc - go for it. Wall-mounted acrylic nail polish racks are great for paints!

I agree with Dave and Azazelx. I recommend Lights. Either LED daylight, or Alzo natural light CFLs. Things which make the workspace comfortable , which improve it, always worth the money... to a point. Gold handled hobby knives would be not worth it.
