Hi All,

First post here, I'm just kicking off a new 40K Project of Craftworld Eldar ready for 8th Edition as it rocks in.

I'm wanting to make up my own Craftworld name/history/fluff, and I'm set on using a bone-based colour scheme (you can blame the recent Warhammer TV tips video on Howling Banshee armour for that!). But I can't decide on a secondary colour to use!

I have a bunch of the old metal Wraithguard lying around to practice on, so I rocked up 3 mini's as colour tests. Only the turquoise one has the completed Bone Armour, the others are just washed over white undercoat for a feel of how the secondary colour would work with the bone:

My initial attempt was with the Turquoise, but I see a lot of people playing Ibraesil (sp?) White & Turquoise and I do want to do something more unique out there.

My second attempt was the Purple one, in thinking that the colour of royalty would be more unique and lend some weight to my background for the fluff. Not sure its bright enough to offset the bone however as a major secondary colour.

The last one was a nice bright Red, but I'm thinking it speaks Saim-Hann in volumes. However, I do like the FW Avatar and this would tie in nicely.

Here's the bone armour painted up in 10 mins as an example of where I'm going with these.



If it helps, I'm looking at putting a Wraith & Aspect heavy army together. I love the wraith models, especially the Wraith Blades / Lords and Knights, and I'm looking to make my principle Aspects Howling Banshees, Swooping Hawks and

Nice I'm a sucker for bone-coloured armour (as my plog will show!).

I'd say that a little gold edging on the red and purple tabards, and maybe a gold freehanded rune on the head would really completely them

Have you also tried a darker, midnight-y blue with the bone colour? That would look excellent with gold trim too

This. Royal Blues are tragically under-used, unless you're a Crimson Fists player. I did a (metal) GK conversion as an inquisitor way back when. Only the scrollwork is bone, but royal blue/gold/bone works well.

MMmmm, Royal / Midnight-y Blue could be a go-er. Are we talking starting out from Macragge Blue or Kantor Blue, here?

I'm ruling out Red now, as you've done that justice already Ynnead

Tough call. Kantor seems a bit darker, but Macragge is a richer color. I'd say find the one that paints over bone better (fewer coats).

Edit: Macragge Blue, Drakenhof Nightshade, Macrage Blue, Altdorf Guard Blue Highlight, Altdorf Guard Blue & Lahmian Medium Glaze on the 'face' and Loincloth.

I'd go blue or purple. I'm leaning slightly towards purple. The bone is a subtle color, so something too bright draws the eye too far away from it IMO.

Also, to the poster, go with the blue or purple. As Ynneadwraith suggested, some gold trimming could compliment really nicely too

Sold. I'd love to know the paints involved in that Purple as well - means feels a little washed out in comparison to the richness on Elbows' Wraithguard!

Purple is definitely a good choice too

Now try the gold edging idea! It'll look fantastic just a thin strip of gold running along the bottom of the tabard.

I sprayed them Army Painter purple.



(Seriously, Army Painter purple spray paint, some purple wash, and a few bits highlighted with...some purple Vallejo I had on hand (the lighter stuff)

Note that Army Painter also does a simple Skeleton Bone spray - so you could do the body in bone, and the head/bits in purple and simply wash them and you'd basically be done.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that's how I've painted 90% of my 300+ miniatures in the last year.

If, when possible a colour primer exists? I use it. Here is an example of my cheating method:

If I don't need dip (for some of the cleaner Eldar models) I don't use it. I'm doing Nurgle Chaos right now so I'm dipping my balls off. You can find the rest of my Eldar army under that same blog. I won't win any painting competitions, but it's way too easy in 2017 to put together a simple, cohesive wargames army with minimal effort.

Ok, on order:

20x 40mm Slottabases

Greenstuff

I imagine Agrax Earthshade will actually somewhat better directly over the bone spray colour, as I won't leave any awkward bits of white between the bone painted on and the white undercoat / shade. And these things are heavy and need some better bases than the old 25mm ones they have.

And it will all be 1000% faster.

Oh and a plastic Farseer to convert/hack/kitbash into a Spiritseer ordered too,

Further experiments now, to see where I want the eventual paint scheme of the army to finish up.




- I tried out some turquoise armour plates in addition to the main Bone & Purple colour scheme, as a third colour to break up the scheme somewhat. I didn't like it, but I do like a few extra Purple plates to help break up the miniature.

- I tried an experiment - instead of Turquoise plates, use Turquoise highlighting on the Purple. To me, it just ... works. It seems to add that 'mystical' touch I was missing from my scheme. Its just a line highlight of Sotek Green and then a smaller highlight of Temple Guard Blue.

- I don't like the ancient brass look on the weapon. I much prefer the more mystical black with Turquoise highlights, so I'll likely do the full weapon this way instead of just the barrel.

- I tried a silver trim on the purple loincloth. Meh. The Wraithguard rune in White seems a better idea, if I can freehand it.

- I tried the Astrogranite texture paint - I really dont like the stuff. I prefer the old PVA & Sand approach, tbh, although with the time to dry on PVA and the 2-3 steps to get the base looking decent (wash in suitable colour, drybrush step 1, drybrush step 2, patch up where I've managed to drybrush model ) I could do with a better method.


Anyways, these kind of extra detail steps I'm imagining after getting the model to basic playable status, which seems to be:

- Spray Skull Bone Army painter
- Wash model in Agrax Earthshade
- Base coat weapon Abaddon Black
- Base coat purple areas in Nagarroth Night
- Base the model
- Playtime!

I'm starting to think on possible colour schemes for my vehicles now, and I'm thinking of reversing the scheme to a predominantly Purple scheme, with those subtle turquoise highlights around the panels on the vehicles. I'd then use Bone for contrast, and I was thinking of making a lightning spray stencil a'la the the Ulthwe knotwork they use on their vehicles for added detailing.

When in doubt, fewer colours and simpler is always better (if you don't have a real solid plan). I think flip-flopping the colour scheme is a good idea on Eldar for sure. I did two Eldar dreadnoughts at the same time, completely flipped the paint scheme on each and they both work (then did another dread w/ quartered flip-flopped scheme, etc.)

The only things I'd ditch on your test model - the blue knee cap, doesn't really do anything and is just an unnecessary extra. If you really want to do the knee-caps, just do them matching purple. I also agree that the silver on the loincloth is unnecessary too.
