I've always felt like they would make a great addition to my otherwise complete Moría army, but a I don't think I can afford to drop $40+ on each one. Any ideas for a more cost-effective conversion? I was considering vargheists before WHFB went the way of the dodo...

Well, the Vargheist figures are still available from GW for their Age of Sigmar game (as part of the Flesh Eater Court faction, IIRC).
If you don't want to go that route, Reaper Miniatures makes some demon figures that you could use.
03771: Shadow Demon
03747: Bat Demon
03063: Gargoyle
I don't have exact sizes, but based on prices these are all larger-than-28mm-human sized.

Nice thanks for the recommendation!! I'll check them out and see what the most cost-effective method is. Can't pass up running something that fearsome for fewer points than a cave troll

If monetary cost is an issue, I think at least the first two figures are available in Reaper's Bones material (a soft plastic) for about half or less the price of the metal figure.
