I liked the idea of taking a single Solitaire, Death Jester, and Shadowseer and gaining the formation benefits of Infiltrate, Stealth and Shrouded. I thought this fit well with the Kroot models in their original incarnation as guerrilla experts. I may use the Death Jester and Shadowseer in the future as unit upgrades, but more time and effort went into painting the Solitaire as a worthy character model.

The Death Jester was made using the Ork big shoota, and I kept the muscular arms as a comedic element, along with adding a cigar for the same reason. Every army needs the cigar-smoking biceps-bulging heavy gunner.

The Shadowseer utilizes Wood Elf treemen bits and a magic effect from a Slaanesh chariot. As the first psyker model in my Kroot army, I've decided to go for a green fel magic effect and will use it on any future models.

For the Solitaire I mainly used Lizardmen bits for the belt and of course the jaw bone war mask. The claw is taken from the Wulfen. I decided to paint the skin on this model rather than the usual drybrush as I hadn't done so in a long time and wanted to give it another go. I left many areas of blacklining between different colors to try and make the model pop more from tabletop distance.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new rules for 8th edition and giving these guys their first run out in an upcoming game; comments and criticism are more than welcome as I tend to go back and repaint or add/remove bits to models.

Really nice, I like the idea of using Kroot as counts-as models due to their reputation as guerilla experts. Shame this isn't represented in their Tau rules. Do you have plans to make more?

I agree with the counts-as. When the Tau were first introduced, the Kroot Mercenary White Dwarf list portrayed them as a close combat army that relied on terrain features to survive. Then the rules for Kroot and the Forgeworld units began getting toned down as the Tau army needed a weakness- namely melee. I always saw them as reverse-Orks in that they hit harder but are more fragile. Nowadays I use Aeldari rules for my Kroot, which makes them fast and hard-hitting, but unable to get hit back. All the tricks and rules from Eldar also allow a certain degree of sneakiness.

I do plan on making more counts-as Kroot, I have enough basic troops so now just have fun converting single models and beasts. Usually a useful Aeldari character appears so I build up a Kroot version of it. The next thing I want to make is a Farseer on jetbike which will end up being a Kroot psyker riding a winged Kroot beast.
