Hi guys!
What carapace, details and claw colour do you think would work with a black and orange chitin?

The direct compliment of orange is blue.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Yep as above blue is probably the way to go, with red claws maybe, if you google 'orange tyranids' there are some good examples

That's too much of a contrast for my taste.

Black and orange are high contrast too? I'm confused.

I just think it'll be too many contrasting colours if I paint the carapace blue.

It doesn't need to be bright or vibrant or anything. It could just have a bluish tinge.

Golden Makes these really neat paints called interference paints. If the shells are all base coated black and you put a single layer of blue interference you will get this kind of reflective beetle shell like blue that will make the orange really pop and look real neat.

thanks! Thats a great idea. Where can I get those paints?

Im leaning more towards a black basecoat on the carapace with secret eapon old rust as a highlight. Not sure hos that gonna turn out though.

You can get Golden paints at a lot of arts and crafts store. I just got my bottle off ebay though.

The pictures don't really do it justice. But here are a few models using it. I base coated the shells black, used a dark brown to add some lines on the edges of the shell plates and then put on a coat of Goldens Green Orange Interference (depending on how the light hits it it fluctuates from a green to a orangy brown, mostly it stays green though)

BTW red is the direct compliment of green. Notice I have a reddish brown for the body to help make that green pop. Same with your blue. It doesn't need to be fire truck red and your blue doesn't need to be sky blue.

Thanks man, thats really helpful!
I think green-orange might be the way for me to go as well. The Chitin effect look awesome, it looks kindof metallic, especially on the picture with the model on the white table.

So the chitin is just black primer, black base, brown highlights and orange-green interference paint?

I think I'll do almost the same as you have for the chitin, just with the addition of the bright orange to yellow spots on black in a pattern like this frog.

Do you think the Interference colour can go over the entire chitin? If its mainly orange/yellow like the frog? or only on the black, and i can do a gloss on the orange/yellow?

What colour did you use on the carapace? I was thinking I'd use Old rust from secret weapon, It looks like you used the reddish brown you used. It's kindof like a Burgundy. With 50% khardic flesh and 50% old rust as a highlight to keep it quite dark.

No black base. Its just black primer.

Its sort of metalic but not really. It really comes across more beetley like a june bug or japanese beetle.

How it actually comes out js VERY dependant on what colors are underneth. Grab some of your spare carnifex front carapace bits and paint 1/2 one color base and the other another color base and then go over it with the green orange to see what it will look like.

We all have tons of those bits and it will go a long way to letting yoj know what your working with. Its VERY transparent.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The red is prime black. I think army painter dark fleshtone, and then army painted brown leather (more of a tan and really transparent but adds a lot of depth without brightening it up too much) washed with nuln oil.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Clawz and teeth are army painter skeleton bone was in nuln oil lightly and agrax earth shade heavily.

If there's only black and brown underneath, on the pictures it doesnt look transparent at all, it looks like it has really good coverage.

Here are some images that might illuminate it a bit for you.

Again, the pictures don't really do it justice. It's something you need to see in motion to really see how good it looks. The pictures just cannot capture the 2 tone fluctuating colors.

The warrior is primed black, base coated with a vibrant but dark green and top coated with the Golden Green orange. The bigger model is my kit bash Exocrine. That's got the same colors we talked about before. Black, brown edging, green orange.

Here is one of my test carnifex shells.

As you can see, depending on the base color it changes DRASTICALLY.

The darker the colors the more of the green will be visible more often. Think of it like window tint. When the light is on the inside (base coat) you see right through it. When the light is on the outside and it's darker inside (darker base coat) the color becomes more deep and the green is a lot easier to see.

This is a thread I found about the color before I ordered my bottle. He talks about testing it on Black Primer and White Primer.

You can also mix the interference paint straight into the other paint for a bit more coverage. If you get their Fluid line it's a fair bit thinner than we're used to with Citadel/Vallejo/etc.
