So looking at the spoiled index i'm wondering what the point of a multi-melta is?
In my example ill be using these guns against a Rhino toughness 7, 3+ armour save. just from a single marine. Also assuming all shots hit.
A Multi-melta gets 1 shot, wounds on a 3 and totally removes the save. Also has a chance of 6 damage but an equal chance of 1, which can be negated at half range.
so the Grav cannon gets 4 shots, wounding on 5s and forcing the save to 6. but against a 3+ save changes the damage from 1 to d3. potentially (low) 12 damage from shooting.
At 1 point more than the Multi-melta would the Grav cannon not be the better choice?

Not necessarily.
The Grav-cannon is stronger against infantry and heavy infantry. The Multimelta at best will kill a single Terminator. The Grav cannon can potentially kill 4.

Now only a CSM player. |

Melta outside half range is 2/3*3.5 for 2.333 wounds. In melta range its 2/3*4.5 for 3 wounds.
Grav Cannon is 4*1/3*5/6*2 for 2.2222 wounds.
So its pretty marginal. Grav is slightly worse but it probably more than makes up for that against other targets.

Melta just feels bad in this edition.
They should have made it d6 mortal wounds against vehicles at half range

Something that would be hard to quantify is that melta benefits far mor from command points than grav does.

I'm by no means a power gamer or have even played 40k that much or for very long. But to me it feels like a Multi-melta is over costed for what it can do

Actually, putting more thought into it...
d6 mortal wounds would still suck... might even suck even more...
since s8 means they are rolling decently enough when it comes to toughness
Ap-4 means they are already ignoring most vehicle armor saves...
the loss of 2d6 drop the lowest would mean that 1 or 2 mortal wounds would happen a lot more often which is pretty ignorable.
Melta still feels bad this edition tho

Grav always should have been noticably more expensive with Shred when used against MCs, GMCs, FMCs and FGMCs.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |
