Howdy,

My 40k Fu is a couple of decades out of date; 2nd edition. I've been talked into giving the new version a go. On a lark I decided to try something completely different than what I played way back then, Genestealer Cults. I'm shooting for a starting force of 500 points. Any suggestions on what to do and especially what not to do. I understand that nobody has any experience with these rules or force, yet. I'm just looking for a place to begin my journey back down the 40k rabbit hole.

Thanks!

Your best bet for a starting cult force is to get the deathwatch overkill boxed set. It comes with all the HQ units plus about 32 cult infantry models. Even if you never did anything with the marines the set come with, it is a great value (es. Considering 5 acolytes is $40). The units come with fixed load outs, but you can worry about getting special weapons later.

Looks like I started well. I got the Overkill lot of genestealers from a friend.

I'm in the process of putting together a GSC army, and I got the DWOK box plus a box of the Hybrids/metamorphs. The latter kit comes with a bunch of spare arms, heads etc which are compatible, with some very minor conversion work, with the mono-pose guys from DWOK. Given that the DWOK set has the same GS sprue twice, this means you can also avoid duplicate models, as well as getting some of the juicy options. I may well end up doing the same with the Neophytes, but I've only built one unit of them so far.

Great, I suggest that your next purchase be a single box of acolytes. This will get you up to three squads, and you will get one of each special weapon too. Pick whichever ones look most fun to you, probably one per squad (i.e. Drill, saw, demo charges) and make the last two guys into either regular hybrids or your first two metamorphs. You can do the same basic thing with a neophyte box, too, but I think the acolytes are a better follow up as they are the heart of the army.
