Have not received anything on 8th as of yet... But was in the process of building a sh formation for my home brewed sm army. Q is it still viable and if so is it any good in 8th?

In Matched play (the one you can expect in tournaments) you must deploy at least half your force on the table at start of game.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

If you are speaking of a Formation, the Formations which came about in 6th and 7th will apparently not be available in 8th. You're stuck with the core detachments, for the most part. The "any good" question should hit another of the boards.

That being said, Reserves are handled quite differently. You choose when to bring them out (including Turn 1), rather than rolling for them, and you need to have them out by Turn 3 or they're dead.

Assault Marines also have a very different datasheet going in to 8th, and their version of Deep Strike doesn't preclude them from Charging, so unless the Reserves rules say you can't (I haven't seen one way or the other), they'll be little changed there.

So, the only thing you lose out on is them being their own detachment, and the ability for Devastators to set up a target for a pounding by the Assault Marines.

Let me appropriate this thread for a simple question: I know I have to put at least 50% of my stuff on the table turn 1. But can i put everything else in reserves, or ONLY if they have a rule for that (like assault marines)?
I mean, can I put tactical marines on reserves?

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

Only stuff that has rules to allow you to reserve it on the datasheet.

Well the one thing about the sh formation that I liked is the fact that you can choose when the pods come into play instead of rolling for it, (that and that the assault marines could use jump packs in movement and "charge")
Was just getting the hang (kinda) of 7th, only playd 3 games...thanks for the input.

In 8th you get to pick when everything arrives. Thats just default now.

You can recreate it pretty well. The Pods can come in when you want to, Assault Marines can jump in and assault from reserves, and the little armored cherub floating baby servitor thing will let your Devs shoot twice (one time use).

The only issue may be having everything in reserve, so you may need some other units on the board to deploy, or Forge the Narrative with Open or Narrative playstyle.

Something else that might be really fun to try sometime is to load up your drop pods with two squads of devastators each.

Imagine 4 x heavy weapon devs dropping down on a flank and laying low a chunk of the army. Have a Captain with a Jump pack(or terminator armor) drop down/teleport alongside assault marines/terminators to provide re-rolls to hit.

Is this feasible? Am I dreaming?

[edit] Then again, with new points cost I'm sure those two drop pods would cost half of my army any ways.

Charistoph: the reserves rules you describe are "Tactical Reserves", and only for Matched play missions.

Narrative play has just "Reserves" which is defined by mission or falls back on an unchanging roll after first turn, lasting until end of game.

Finally open play has "Reinforcements"(from the core rules) which are arrive as you wish and lasts until end of game.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Considering how many people have been focusing on Matched Play alone, and the the OP's consideration of "viable", I don't think it was too far off going with that definition.
