Ancient Space Wolves Venerable Dreadnought

Trying to decide what to do with my Primaris Marines...
The Space Wolves don't really need them on the tabletop like they do in the fluff.
On the tabletop Deathwatch suffer all the same problems.
How are you guys including yours in your armies?

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |

Not to be a party pooper, but until they get a codex I think I am not bothering with them.
I don't think the intercessors or hellblasters are really worth taking at all. Their guns are not that much better than normal bolters / plasma guns, and they have no other weapons options or transports yet.
The Interceptors seem decent, and their weapons seem worth while, so i could see using them, but i am not sure they are much/any better than deepstriking terminators, who put out similar firepower, are potentially harder to kill, and are better in close combat.
The Primaris Lieutenants seem like the best of the bunch at the moment, as the re-rolling 1s to wound are quite good.
I don't see a reason to take a Primaris Ancient over a normal Ancient, since they do the same thing and you don't really want either one to be getting in combat.
The HQ options seem okay, but are expensive and not a ton better than the other non-primaris options. I suppose you would just take them if you wanted a full Primaris list, but that's about all i can think of.

You can't poop a party that is yet to have invites written up, sounds like you're coming to the same conclusions as me.

I'd agree with jcd386. The only thing really close to worth it seems to be the Hellblasters, but with no ablative wounds, you're losing a lot each time (and multidamage attacks just aren't that rare), and they aren't significantly better than regular plasmaguns... so you're paying nearly twice as much per plasma marine for a bigger target overhead. If you're really set on it, company veterans can play this same role for significantly less.
Intercessors are more points for less firepower. The AP is nice, but more guns is better. If you really, really want AP, you might as well go the extra step and bring sternguard (-2 AP for less), or even deathwatch. Yes, they're more vulnerable to single wound weapons, but at least they perform the role better (and match the army).
The drop guys... eh. Even if I could get past the models and the flying stands (a pet peeve of mine), they're a suicide unit. A really expensive, small one. Heavy bolters are cheap and plentiful elsewhere- they simply don't offer anything.
tl;dr: The Primaris motto seems to be 'do less, for more.' The edition's math seems to be pushing in the completely opposite direction, encouraging outright abandonment of high points stuff for more effective stuff.

I'm gonna mix em in with my regular Marines, Intercessor squads might be easier to plant in cover then a tatical squad. and hellblasts are going to murder terminators.
Interceptor's look like they could be fun but they're expensive, I think they'll be one of those units that eaither does nothing or is the star of the show, depending on your opponent etc.
I do agree that we're missing the transport option right now, if Primaris Marines could use a drop pod I'd argue they may be an excellent replacement for sternguard

I assume we will at some point get a large and a small transport, some sort of drop pod (from forge world if not from GW), and some kind of special weapon options. And once they do, they could be a good choice. Until then there are simply better options for marines.

right now we know we're getting a transport, a dreadnought, and presumably 2 differant types of infantry. from the way the novel described it, the transport sounds like it'll pull double duty as the drop pod. which... is actually kinda a neat idea given the biggest weakness of drop pods is once your troops are delivered they lack a degree of mobility, I expect it'll be expensive (I figure 250+ points) but might be worth it

Not to mention lacking any ability to use the Drop Pod as a bunker - best you can do is hide the unit behind one and hope your opponent moves out of cover to get a shot at your models.
Guess I'll model my earliest thoughts on the Primaris Marines - they'll make nice chatacters for a regular army.

well Primaris marines are rumored to drop in July, if so then we should have the rest of the inital range,if what we've heard is true Primaris Marines should be pretty capable of standing on their own two feet by the end of July.

it's not like you're trying to decide how to build your marines.(monopose and all) I'd get the current crop of Primaris out of the way assmbly wise and just wait to paint em.
the basic starter set has a pretty good force to build around, it's basicly a demi-company.

Yeah, I'm kind of proud that monopose means very little to me beyond a couple of extra minutes, bit more glue and greenstuff and some new smiley faces on my finger and thumb tips.
...I think you just gave me an idea.
Thank you!

I've been rolling around the thought of using Inceptors as a sort of "Rapid Response" type of unit. Shoring up lines that are cracking or racing around to deal with deep striking units, that sort of thing.
