Subject: Disappointed with my local GW over the Fate of Konor campaign
|
 |
Death-Dealing Ultramarine Devastator
|
So I went into my local GW yesterday to pick up the new rules and indices I need for my armies and got chatting to a staff member about the Fate of Konor campaign as they're trying to get as many people signed up to take part as possible.
As a mainly Ultramarine player and having amassed a not insubstantial amount of forces since I returned to the hobby in April '16 from a hiatus I was quite excited to get involved from the moment I read about it on the Community page.
GW has put a as requirement as part of the campaign that everyone should make a new army over 50 power points together to be fielded. Now I'm completely fine with this, the point I made at the time being that I've got far more than that sat in my to do pile and it would give me a driver in making progress through that pile of grey plastic. At this point however the manager interjected that this wasn't allowed, that the minimum 50 power level army must be bought from GW and painted within the campaign timescale in order to be allowed to participate.
Now considering that in less than 18 months I have purchased and painted a full company plus vehicles and have nearly a full other company to do not to mention my second small army and have decided, partly based on circumstances, that I don't want to purchase any new models for a while I found this a rather uncomfortable revelation.
Now I know GW as a company cares for nothing of their customers apart from their money but I've never felt it that severely from the GW staff at my local store as they have always come across more as hobbyists than sales staff but this has really shaken that view up. With the manager and two other members of staff effectively making out that I was being unreasonable for not wanting to commit to spending even more money in their store when I've just been in and bought the new rules and indices and a couple lore books that day and completely ungrateful for the immense amount of money I've already put through their til in the last year. I feel rather betrayed.
Has anyone else had this kind of experience or been specifically excluded from this campaign for such a silly reason?

Just another casualty of the way GW runs their stores and pays their managers of them. Hopefully you can find a FLGS near you that is running the campaign as well.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

How long do you think miniatures keep? Indefinitely? Sadly, no miniatures are only good for a year or two (about the same as canned goods to slightly less) before they need to be replaced. Games Workshop miniatures double so because they are so jewel-like objects of wonder. Remember to always check the expiration date on the box before buying./s
Seriously, I would never step foot in that store again with such as policy. There are always means and methods to game outside of a store. Once you figure how, it is well worth it.

funny thing is, generally if I go to a gaming store for an event I'm likely to buy something, (no time like a event to realize you have a hole in your list) I wonder how many sales this idiot manager is gonna lose as a result.
now that said if you never buy at the local GW, are buying always online etc then I see nothing wrong with him not letting you play in the store, but... yeah

I once bought Settra from a local FLGS and found that old Setty was missing his GLORIOUS beard. So I phoned up the FLGS and asked about it. They said that their hands are tied since it's a GW product and they didn't have a spare, so told me to contact GW.
I called the local GW shop. The clerk that answered the phone snooted at me, saying that the reason the piece was missing was because I bought it at "some riffraff shop" and that I deserved it for not buying at a proper GW location, before hanging up on me. I got pretty miffed at that and emailed GW's customer service. Within 12 hours they got back to me profusely apologizing for it; they were suppose to honor all missing pieces requests regardless of venue so long as I can provide a proof of purchase (which I can and the FLGS was more than happy to help me with). They told me that the clerk was not only acting rudely, but also out of order with their policies. Later I was informed that he had been "let go" because he'd apparently been one of those asshats who'd try to push product anyway he could and was driving away more customers than he brought in.
If you still wanna participate in the event but don't wanna start a new force, maybe email GW and see what their official stance on it is. If you're feeling kinda vindictive, mention the store owner's name and location.

Tell that guy that you'd like to tell his regional manager about how that policy isn't very community friendly and would like his or her phone number. Then when he offers to make an exception just for you, tell him you still want the number.

Wait.. the campaign phases last 7 days. So to take part in the first phase you'd have to buy and paint a 50PL army in at most 6 days?

The Konor event does not begin until the end of July...you have more than 5 weeks still.

GW take this stuff very seriously. For all of their faults, the corporate responses to customer complaints are usually impeccable. I would expect a decent response if you go this route and they think you are in the right.

When GW is letting FLGS report games for the campaign, as well as letting people play at home and record their results, then there is no reason why you should have to collect and paint the models during the course of the campaign.

Warhammer Community wrote:One of the great things about this campaign is that you can play anywhere. At home, in store, at a club – however you like and with any style of play you like: open, narrative, matched – all your results can count towards the outcome.
One you’ve played a few games, you’ll be able to register them in store. There are going to be thousands of participating locations around the world. Our own Warhammer and Games Workshop store will, of course, be involved, as will thousands of local independent hobby shops and gaming centres, so you shouldn’t be too far from a location where you can join in.
That manager is mistaken, and no longer deserves your business.

not really. I spend about 4 hours putting together 2 dark imperium boxes worth of primaris while watching a few episodes of house of cards. I left arms off for painting, will be priming and base coating them tonight (airbrush) and will have them to basic table top in a few hours (gold aquillas and eye lenses, rose gold trim, gunmetal on bolters and belt buckle, brown on belt pouches and holsters, black on joints and belt itself, dry brush a shade then wash and finally transition paint effect for blue-green on power armor ceremite done assembly line style) 4 intercessor squads, 2 hell blaster squads, 2 interceptor squds, 2 ancients, 2 gravis captains, 4 LT models easily 50 points. custodies armies could be done even faster.
they would not be winning any awards but they would look nice on a table
on the OP post though that is a douche bag gw rep my local flgs will let you participate with 2nd edition metal models if that is what you brought.

So this thing is just going to be flooded with fake battle results? I guess there is no point beyond enjoying your local scene then. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, having to paint a new force kind of screws over anyone with only a little hobby time, low income, or a disability.

I think having a good time with your friends is the total point. Expecting apocalyptic, world shattering differences to be made by the results of the campaign is a little....unrealistic.

Indeed. That's the point of every game if you ask me. I'm just concerned that if I can participate in either of my gaming locations that my chosen side might not be victorious
