I'm trying to work out how much things costs, but it's unclear to me.

Let's say I have a 5-man unit of infantry...

- According to an Index, they are 10 ppm
- The unit is therefore 50 pts
- The unit's profile says each man has a rifle
- The Index says that rifle is worth 3 pts each

Is the unit 50 points, or is it 65?

Let's say next that I have a character model.

- According to the index it is 150 ppm
- The character's profile says it has a Weapon1, but that it can be replaced by a Weapon2
- The index says that Weapon1 is 5 pts, and that Weapon2 is 25 pts

Is the initial model 150 or 155 points, and is the upgraded just going to add 25 points directly for the Weapon2 replacement, or just add 20 pts for having removed Weapon1?

I'm so confused.

Wargear is separate cost from models except of special characters.

So in your example your 5 man unit would be
models + wargear
(5 x 10) + (5 x 3) = 65

For the character

With weapon 1 he is 150 + 5 = 155
with weapon 2 he is 150 + 25 = 175

You build your list, /then after it is done/ add up the points costs of every model and weapon in your list.

For example, if you had a character with Weapon 1 that could be replaced for Weapon 2, and the Character is 150ppm and Weapon 1 is 5 pts and Weapon 2 is 25 pts, then the total in-list cost of the character is 175ppm, because it cares only about what weapons you are bringing and what models you are bringing. There is no "order of purchasing upgrades" or what not.

For squads, if a Dire Avenger costs 10 ppm and its rifle is 7 pts, then every 10 dire avengers in the list is 170 pts, - 10 10ppm models and 10 7pt rifles.

The 5 man squad would be 65 points.
The character would be 150 + 25 = 175

The points costs you see listed are for the base model, with no equipment. You are basically paying for the model's base stats and rules.
You then add the cost of any equipment to the model. Note that this includes base equipment as well.

An exception to this would be for unique characters, who already come with everything. The cost listed is how much they are.
