So I have run into a little bit of a conundrum the other day and I am deciding to take it here to Dakka to get some opinions.

So Carnifex kits come with a 50mm Round base. Same as a Hive Tyrant. Except the most recent release was from Deathstorm where it came with a mid sized oval base that does honestly fit them better. Forgeworld stone crushers come with the smaller round base still. As do the ones sold individually on GWs webstore. For this reason I have been basing my Carnifexes (2 regular and a stone crusher) on the smaller round bases, just for the sake of uniformity.

Now, about 2 years ago I ordered a gak load of carnifexes because they were only about 20.00 each and REALLY useful for a lot of conversions I was doing (fex torso for Malanthropes, Harpys, Exocrines).

Well I dug around for my bits and found I had enough to build another to make an OOE. Awesome. Went to find a base.... gak. All I have left are the oval Deathstorm bases.

I am hesitant to use it. On the one hand a Nice Larger scenic base will help him to stand out as the HQ he is. On the other, he has an aura now and that larger base on the only one with an aura could be seen (reasonably too!) as modeling for advantage. I have never been, and do not want to be, TFG.

Whats the right call here? Order up some more round bases? Stick him on the bigger? You don't give a gak? Let me know! Thanks!

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I would of just put all of them on the ovals if they fit better.

outside of some VERY obscure situations it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Bases have already been based and made scenic. I add the rocks and stuff before I prime and then paint them with the model. Taking them off and rebasing them would be a real nightmare.

Yeah thats a bummer.

If you want them to all look the same then id keep them all the same.

if this is going to be a super epic conversion then id go with the oval and add a little diorama of him wrecking something with the extra space.

over the years, base sizes have changed for many models. Original "screamer killer" carnifexen came on a 40mm square bases for example. Whatever base comes with the official GW packaging is what is permissible regardless of future changes for that model. Anything else requires your opponents permission.

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.

You aren't TFG for having a few slightly different bases.

To be TFG you would have to be modelling base sizes to your maximum advantage. Like putting everyone around a character on the smallest possible base and jamming them into the aura.

As others have said you are not TFG for different sized bases, especially since it is GW mixing it up. My Brood has two on 50mm round bases and one on the oval base from Deathstorm. No one has ever said anything to me about it. I prefer the oval bases as the model does fit better on the and there is more room to put a small die on it as a wound counter.

If an opponent has a problem with it, then agree to ignore bases and measure from/to the model itself.

If you have enough oval bases you can simply mount the old round bases on the ovals and then purty them up...

You make your model look cool, I will never complain, even if I think it might be a little cheesy as it goes against me...

And then, when I get that extra distance for a charge, or a shot, etc. I"ll be thinking "That's what you get", and slowly realize that really there isn't a real advantage at all...

Changing bases all the time costs money some models don't even come with bases.
Only time they matter to me is when they're up for judgement in the painting/modelling stakes - even then small ones sometimes look better, saw a Dreadnaught with a 40mm base under each foot, each base had a half teleported, crushed Necron. It looked sweet.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

I personally would not mind him being on a bigger base since 1.) Due to Deathstorm that is now technically the base he came with and 2.) he's the leader-beast of your choppy horde, so he should be more identifiable.

That said, I can see why *some* people might take issue. However imo it's such a small advantage that anyone that does take issue would probably be raising a lot more "issues" that aren't really issues.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

for what it's worth the new dark imperium boxed set uniformly seems to put characters on a slightly larger base.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Thanks guys. OOE is going on the larger oval since it's what I have left. I will put a smashed drone or something on the base from my Tau to make the base look real nice.

Go with the oval, if anyone questions is say its to make him stand out more as being different.

Have one on oval and one on round (somewhere) the oval looks far better

This probably really doesn't matter much in the long run of this thread, but Hive Tyrants come with 60mm bases.

40K - T'au Empire
Kill Team - T'au Empire, Death Guard
Warhammer Underworlds - Garrek’s Reavers

Just use the oval base, for two very simple and should be obvious reasons:

First, because he is a character. Having the different base may HELP your opponents easily identify that the oval is the one they need to kill, or stay away from the oval one, etc

Second, and probably the most important reason...the rule of cool, if the base is damn near the original in size, and you make an awesome conversion, noone in their right mind will question it, as you are obviously more concerned with the passion of the game than modeling for advantage.
