I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but at the end of the rulebook the Squats are mentioned.
There is a background section talking about the different abhuman races ( Ogryns, Ratlings, Beastmen) and Squats are one of them called out.
Apparently they didn't all get eaten by Tyranids, maybe this could presage them coming back in some form.
I'll see if I can get a page number when I get home.

I haven't made my way all the way to the end of the book yet. Did they call out the "Demiurg?" That would have been my guess for bringing squats back as an independent faction. Especially after seeing the Kharadan Overlords.

I'll take a look when I get home, but I do not recall anything about Demiurg. That's what I would have expected after the past few years, so calling them Squats and using the scientific classification (Homo Sapiens Rotundus) for them stood out to me.

The reference was in the 6th and 7th Edition rulebooks too.

They have been around, in the background, for a while. Their core world were eaten but there are still a fair few of them kicking around.
Also, Demiurg are not related to squats at all. They are totally independent and just a second attempt at introducing a dwarf faction. Thematically similar in some ways but the idea that they are squats is wrong.

They were always in lists like that in every edition.

That's the same material as published in the 6th edition rulebook.

the Demiurg are also referenced in the Battlefleet Gothic video game, they are allies of the Tau.

Demiurg were actually invented for BFG, back in the expansion Battlefleet Gothic: Armada. They got a couple of ship models and never really went anywhere after that.

They started mentioning them again in 6th when they put them in a section on abhumans.
Even in the original "and the Nids ate 'em" fluff they weren't completely destroyed. But the Brotherhoods were largely disbanded and all of the Homeworlds were annexed by the Imperium.
It is still pretty unlikely that GW will bring them back. But hey, I wouldn't mind being surprised.

I wouldn't have expected Genestealer Cults to become a standalone faction again but here we are. I get the impression the Khadoran's in AoS were a sort of experiment to see how well that vaguely steampunkish concept of Not-Dwarfs would go down. Considering the largely overwhelmingly positive reaction to them and what I assume are decent sales I wouldn't be surprised if we saw them come back at some point in the form of a more fleshed out Demiurg, complete with retcons about how the Squats are an off-shoot of them/joined with them post-Tyranids chowing down.

This was in the 6th ed rulebook as well, it's been around for a while.
I remember going to a midnight release for 6th and seeing that for the first time.
They've been "back" for a while. They're just heavily depleted in numbers now and only really contribute forces for their PDF and IG regiments.
