Can anyone with a bit of 40K experience shed some light on which Faction is best suited to making a Heavy Deadnaught list work?

Just purchased Imperium 1 and hopefully picking up the Forge World Armour book this weekend.

I do not currently own many 40k models so I need to make sure I buy the right stuff as it is going to be an expensive purchase (looking at a 2k army).

Thanks in advance.

I think all of the space marine armies can do a decent dreadnought spam. However, blood angels and space wolves both have special versions of dreads.

Space Wolves have 2 named dreads, one shooty (Bjorn), one melee (Murderfang), and can give their normal dreads shields and axes to make them more durable and better in melee.

Blood Angels have Dreadnought Librarians (so it could be fun to cast powers, smite and the 4+ invul one could be useful i guess), Furioso and death company dreads (both are really good at close range with heavy flamers, and in close combat).

This is of course in addition to the normal shooty dreadnoughts from the SM book.

The primaris marines also have a big dreadnought coming out, which looks like it will be mostly, but not bad in combat either, so that might be cool to use too.

Forge World also has a number of dreads, but i am not that familiar with them.

I think if it was me I might try out the blood angels, but i think all of the options are doable, even if they might not be a top teir competitive army (though i dont think they would be bad either).

I would also recommend magnetizing every arm option of the dreads so you can change out loadouts as you figure out what you like.

Thanks for the advice. There do appear to be a few options in the Forge World book just have not got that yet. I was leaning towards the Blood Angels, however wasn't really sure which characters are going to work best with them. I would also really love to get an assassin or two into the mix.

How many Dreads can you realistically get in a 2k list while getting some CPs?

Realistically, 7-9 dreads in 1-2 detachments. Most Dreads exist in the elite slot, but a few HQ and Heavy Support options exist. The Leviathan and Deredeo are both HS (and expensive) and the Libby and Chaplain Dreads are HQs. 2 Vanguard detachments, or one and a Batallion will get you some CP's (although you're going to have to take 3 units of min scouts for 165pts in a batallion, which is basically another Dread cost wise)

Thanks, yes I think I will need to try and fit some into the HQ spot especially if I want to get an assassin in the list. Probably going to want to look at a Techmarine too....

Taking the supporting units into consideration along Dreadnoughts themselves, I think Blood Angels generally wins out due to having Stormraven to take their special Dreads into enemy face T1, unload them T2 and charge. Space Wolf on the other hand, have no way to get Murderfang or Axe Shield Dread into enemy line within reasonable time, and highly likely that they will get shot to pieces marching on board.

Another combination worth considering is having a company of Ultramarine Compemtor Dreadnought surrounding Guilliman and a few Biker Techmarines march up the field. Compemtor Dreads are having a 5++ save, moves faster, shots will hit on a rerollable 3+ even on the move, and punches harder than normal Dreadnoughts when in combat.

Just saying Gun Dreads are better, tankier, and cheaper than Tau Broadsides

This is the edition of spamming Gunline Dreads

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

Unfortunately broadsides are criminally overcosted. That doesn't mean that other stuff is good - just that it's not awful.

Dreads do seem quite cool though. They are good all-rounder units for a decent price.

Personally I'd advise the OP to hang on for a month and see what the new primaris stuff brings. They'll have a dreadnought and we have no idea what it will be like.

If you wanne go 'old school' (mid school? Talking 5th edition) dakka dreads where a thing for grey knights. While not the same now, you can take 2 long ranged weapons, and if you get caught in mellee yiu can just smite your way out. Smite in mellee is great.
