Hi guys.
So I'm going to try magnetizing some bases for the first time and have a question.
So i want to make them flush or protrude from the bottom of the base just a little. The magnet is too small to fill the base so my question is what do you guys do to fill the gap?
Do you use putty, scrap plasticard, what?

Either is a viable option:

Epoxy putty is nice if your goal is to mount the magnet perfectly flush, as a slightly proud mound will deform and settle around the magnet while keeping it forced flat against the underlying sheet.

For any other case (slightly recessed is what I'd use - not sure why you'd want them proud, but to each their own), I'd use styrene sheet or scrap sprue. Whatever sizes and shapes you have available, a little trimming or layering will likely get you close to where you want to be, in terms of height. If you want the mounting to be bulletproof, use a solvent cement to weld up extra plastic in the center of the underside, then drill a recess for the magnet to be mounted in.

I use epoxy putty (grey miliput). But it doesn't stick that well to the underside of GW's bases (don't know if it's because it's smooth, or if I should wash them). So I put a drop of superglue between the putty and the base, seems to fix everything.

Also, it's not what you asked, but I used to put magnets under my bases, and transport them in boxes with a steel sheet at the bottom.
I now do the opposite for small models: I have steel washers under my bases, and put magnetic sheets in my carrying cases. It adds more weight to each miniature (I play a top-heavy army, so it's much better), and I don't have any magnet-related problems when playing (two figures that attract each other when they get close, measuring tape that sticks to bases, attraction to nails used to assemble a wood table etc.).

its a stronger bond if the magnet actually touches the metal. At least that's what i was thinking

@fresus - thanks, i havent exactly decided if im going with the magnet or metal on the mini.
my only concern is adding too much height since most of my bases are mdf replacements and are not concave.
