It's covered in the rules in the description of pistol weapons. Short answer - No. You have to choose pistols or non pistols.

That is what I thought as well. I played a Marine player and we kind of messed that up a bit

It happens. Even though there are only 8 pages of rules, it is still easy to miss stuff, especially with all the special rules for units printed on their data sheets. I kept forgetting the bloat drone has a 5+ invulnerable save because it is a daemon engine, in addition to its armor and the Disgustingly Resilient special rule my first 8th edition game...

Actually you have to choose either pistols, grenades, or all other weapons.

A. That wasn't his question.
B. Not sure what your point is about grenades. A single model may always throw a grenade if it has them each time a unit shoots. But they are most certainly not an either/or choice like pistols and other weapons are. The only choice about grenades is whether you sacrifice one models firing to throw one. The entire unit can't throw grenades, and if a model does, the rest of the unit still has to choose between pistols or other weapons.

Almost. The entire unit doesn't have to choose gak. Each model may choose.
You select a unit to shoot.
Each model may choose all pistols, one grenade (keeping in mind that only one model may choose grenade), or all other weapons.
Any weapons they can shoot that they did not shoot at one target may be fired at another target.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

It doesn't matter. Your answer that you choose either pistols or non pistols was incorrect and you got called on it. A grenade is a non pistol but can't be fired with any other weapons.
