Only smurf army I've ever faced is a guy that runs his 30k alpha legion as smurfs in 40k since 8th dropped.

That's right. People just can't let go of the utter gak that Ward wrote so many years ago. I for one like the Ultramarines. Ever since the dark ages when Ward wrote the Marine codex (that he wanted to name Codex: Ultramarines btw) they have gotten a bit more relatable. While they are still "super duper pure" and "pinnacle of warriors" etc etc, there are some genuinely good stories and charactes in their fluff.
I think people need to forget about the bad things Ward wrote, jump off the bandwagon and form their own opinions.

Don't see much of official chapters these days. More of home brews. Easier to chapter hop.

that and the game almost enchourages homebrews. I've got a UMs army but I've always felt I missed out on a chance to "do my own thing" I nearly went with a custom army wth the stufgf I assmbled from calath and the Primaris stuff but decided to do blood ravens instead. Dawn of war got me into 40k so I decided I owed a bit of homage

A lot of us just really like making our army our own. My Skitarii have a blue camo pattern that doesn't belong to any known Forge World. I'm not a huge fluff-buff though, so my fluff is a bit silly and was made up on the fly. I call them the <Redacted> Maniple of Pluto. They were placed on Pluto as an outward observation post.
At some point stricken from the records as they were supposed to be reposted somewhere else, but were forgotten in the paperwork. Now they are just drifting around with their eccentric Tech Priest Dominus.
I made that crap up, and I don't even care about fluff. Imagine someone that is really into it. It makes a lot of sense that they want to write the entire story of their Chapter.

I hate them, they're the most common army around, even without considering vanilla marines. But I can't stand SM in general, with the excpetion of a couple of chapters.
To much cheese granted by GW. They're the most annoying army to playing against at competitive levels. In 8th edition I haven't faced them yet, so I may change my judgement.
