So, new edition, new rules. Namely, the "to wound chart" making S5 and S6 weapons wound T4 on a 3+, and most monstrous creatures on a 5+. Also, at the moment, FW Assault Chimeras (armed with Autocannon turrets) are DKoK exclusive, and not available to other Astra Militarum armies, meaning the choice is between the Heavy Bolter or Multilaser.

Now, both have 3 shots, and the same range. However, HB have -1AP while Multilasers have 0AP. Add in that the Multilasers is 10pts to the HB 8pts, then the choice is pretty clear - Heavy Bolter Turret is the better choice.

Is there any reason (apart from aesthetic or fluff) to actually use Multilasers, or should we all just Heavy Bolter up and DakkaDakkaDakkaDakkaDakka till the cows come home?

If you want a pillbox to stay back, take dual heavy bolters. They just seem better than multilasers against most targets. Even against t3, when you would wound on a 2+, the save modifier helps even them out.

If you want to advance, take dual heavy flamers. Ignoring the -1 to hit is good and you can do a lot of damage in only one shooting phase. You also get good overwatch to help keep those assault armies at bay. They are expensive but you get what you pay for.
