Hey, all, I'm looking into doing some alternate universe/heresy stuff, and wanted to ask what you guys think to avoid, and what is the right path to follow?

Make sure everything is plausible, and that you don't have mary sues. Make sure that everyone adheres to the correct personalities. Close plot holes wherever possible.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Read Bolter and Chainswords Dornian Heresy for a good example of an alternative heresy.

This. Though it may ruin your own ambitions as it's amazing

Jealous that Horus is Warmaster
|
I'd love to read an alternative universe where Magnus' warning to the Emperor about Horus' treason actually came through without breaking Big Emps toys, thus keeping the Thousand Sons loyal. While the original story is one of my favourites in 30/40k lore, it would be fun to see the other side.
As a result, Horus' could turn some other legion, maybe the Space Wolves, for maximum irony. The Wolves always seemed a tid bit too "chaos" to me anyway..
This would dramatically change everything, since the Emperor would know about the Heresy before it occured. He would probably don't die since he would be much more prepared. The war would obviously still happen, since Horus would be recruiting his fellow brothers anyway, but the loyalists should have a huge advantage.
Not sure how well this could be done, but I would absolutely read it!

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |
