Possibly a really noobie question, but I wanted to make sure.
I'm really keen to get a Hellforged Contemptor for my Chaos, and would love to know whether it's a sure thing to use it, or if it's one of those, "your opponent has to be cool with it" type things

FW Models are legit in most tourneys, it's really up to the TO. The 'Get your opponents permission' rule has been deprecated for years now... unless I've missed something in the 8th launch.

Most major tournaments... yes
Most local tournaments and leagues...
You need to find out locally, there is plenty for yes and plenty for no

It's not deprecated. You still need their permission because if they don't like what you pull out of your bags, they can just pack up their stuff and leave.

We're talking tournaments here though. Packing up and leaving when you don't like the look of a list is not conducive to winning tournaments and wouldn't happen very often, especially when people are paying for entry and/or playing for prizes.

Yup. Every rule is "with your opponent's permission" kind of by definition assuming they have the alternative of walking away.

tournaments generally yes, though at my flgs in competitive go for it but for newbie tournaments generally fw is a no.
as far as pick up games depends on your opponent. I generally will play FW stuff but I bring multiple lists usually a fun/fluff weak one, a mid power one and a tournament grade one. depending on what fw is being fielded I might reach for that tournament list.

Since most of us guys have some FW models we generally allow FW in our tournaments, as long as you have the rules to use them or if you are running them as proxy for another GW unit. Like I have the RG Dark Fury models and I use them as Shadow Captains for my Co. But in agreeance with other posts check with the TO first. The worst is they say no and you have to leave them at home.

In the case of tournaments, you knew what you were getting yourself into before you signed up. If you don't like it, run your own tournament. And all-flyer lists are what "sportsmanship" scores are for. If you bring a WAAC list to a tournament and proceed to make your opponents' lives a living hell for the duration, you should be penalized for it.

Thanks for the quick replies!
It's mostly because I play Death Guard and it'd be super fluffy to have a Contemptor. Are the Hellforged Contemptors super powerful and likely to make my opponent not want to face me? I have the rules and, while they seem good, they come with a hefty points cost

They're not ridiculous at all. People are just unreasonable about FW things, a lot of the time.

Yeah, it's a tournament, everyone should be trying to "win at all costs". If you bring a fluffy list sure, just expect to get stomped on because you agreed to face WAAC lists when you signed up.

I sure as he'll hope not, because thus far the FW is massively imba.

Yeah let's hand out participation medals while we're at it...
A tournament should be the one place you can build ultra competitive list without being vilified by the fluffy brigade
