Hello everyone!

My friends and I were chatting about 8th Edition and came across a hilarious army idea. Now, we are aware that it violates the 'recommended' tournament rules of 3 detachments max, but it would be REALLY funny.

We considered that an army of characters would be really silly because the only model that could be fired at is the one closest to the enemy until it is dead, and then move onto the next one. We were playing around with Librarians, but it works equally well with Captain in Terminator Armour spam: just put like 30 Terminator Armour captains in the board all walking forwards, and then make sure to have one WAAAAY out front, maybe it deep struck.

Because that one is so much closer, the enemy won't be able to shoot anything at all in the army until that one is dead. With cover, that's a 1+ armour save (with 1s auto failing), and he has his 4+ invuln.

We decided the idea that like 100 IG Platoon and Company commanders taking the field with only the front few being able to be targeted by any given unit was a hilarious enough idea that we're going to try it against my Baneblade company next week.

I expect my baneblades to lose, because each tank will only be able to shoot one target at a time, since there will always be only one closest visible character when it comes time to target the tank's guns.

Anyone else think this is hilarious?

Sounds like it'll take a million years to play. Will be hard to get all those people off of objectives, though.

What do you think about having 100 infantry in units of 1, and having your opponent be the one who determines which gets shot by whom?

Sounds kinda like the 9 Coldstar Commander + Drones list discussed on ATT a while back (including a few battle reports).

Ahhhhh, the good old days of Ninja T'au, back in black to make 'em crack.

This strategy is completely dependent on having an opponent who is running a static gun line that never repositions or charges. Any deepstrikers will negate your entire strategy, not to mention assault oriented armies who will thank you for being able to consolidate endlessly into new combats with characters and never get shot at. Also, all those character are not going to have much combat output. Sure, characters have staying power and can buff each other, but most are only worth their points when they are buffing many other units to increase their combat abilities. When a terminator captain is only buffing himself or maybe one other model, it's a whole lot of wasted points to do that.

A few things from my friend:

1) Even a deep-striking unit can only shoot 1 target out of 30, so it does kinda mitigate the strategy but it'd be funny to watch, say, 10 scouting Dominions put all of their meltaguns into a single IG commissar, because the other commissars aren't the closest visible unit.

2) You can't consolidate endlessly. You consolidate once, which has to be towards the closest enemy unit, then that unit gets free swings at you, and then either stays there and ties you up, or leaves. And that only happens if you manage to kill the first character you charged.

3) Staying power is all you need. If people saying conscripts are OP is to be believed, durability is the only criterion for a unit's effectiveness. 'cause that's all conscripts have.

Tzeentch Daemons have been doing something pretty similar with Heralds and Exalted Flamers.
