So, I'm trying to put together my 1st DA list and while perusing the available info online, I noticed that the Venerable Dreadnought is tagged with the Deathwing Keyword. This got me thinking (probably not the first to do so) that this meant that they could benefit from the Deathwing Anicent (+1 attack) and Asmodai (+1 attack) in addition to the standard Azrael and Primaris Lt. If you affixed each with T-LC and T- autocannons (as I'm reading the list, it appears that the Ven. Dread's right arm can be T-LC and its left T-autos) and put 2-3 in a bubble with the 3 hq & ancient and threw in a Dark Shroud that should be a pretty scary little bubble receiving +2 attacks, reroll missed hits & wounds, -1 for enemies to hit. Throw in Ezekiel (Aversion if something nasty gets w/n range) & a Techmarine if you can, maybe. It would need shielding for sure. Is this viable? Would Asmodai & Ancient stack? Did I miss something because of my noobish ignorance?

Thanks

While I believe that Asmodai and the Ancient do indeed stack, I also do not think that Asmodai applies to the Venerable Dreadnought. His rules give the extra attack to Infantry and Bikers, while the Dreadnought has the Vehicle keyword. The Deathwing Ancient's Banner, though, just states that it gives +1 Attack characteristic to Deathwing Units, which the DA Venerable Dreadnought certainly is. So while the Ancient would give your Dread an extra Attack in close combat, I am not sure that your shooty Dreadnought would really use it all that much. Azrael and a Primaris Lt, though, do work nicely with a shooty Dread or two.

Cheers,

Ah, ok I see. I'm still getting used to all the vocab...I forgot that gun attacks are determined by type (heavy 2 etc) and missed that part for Asmodai. Thanks for the help.

If you read the Dark Angels tactics thread, there are some similar ideas being discussed. I think the Deathwing Ven Dread firing line is actually a fairly potent choice. If you're going to go for a full-on parking lot, you'll want at least one or two Dreads with ccws to beat back assaulty units. Between Azrael, the Ancient, and a couple Dreads, you should be able to deter all but the most dedicated combat units. Meanwhile, you get to shoot your rerollable heavy weapon shots ad nauseam.
