I found the IK kit a joy to assemble, even with magnetizing. I had no problems whatsoever.

Yup, coming back to 40k models after Malifaux they all seem super easy. When faces, wisps of hair, 3 pieces of a whip etc are all separate part of a model, that is tough. 40k models are all pretty easy, even the more fragile models are pretty thick, and sturdy (as long as we aren't talking finecast.)

I swear to God the people who design Malifaux sprues don't realize that those models have to be put together at some point. Or they're sadists. Probably both. Seriously, why is it necessary to have the head of a normal human split into 3 parts?!
As for 40k stuff, I'm fairly lucky in that I only play Tau (though I did play SM back when I first started out and dabbled into Necrons a bit a few years ago) and Tau stuff is far from the worst in terms of assembly. I will say that Devilfish chassis vehicles are a lesson in patience as, much like the Land Raider, if you're even a hair off at any part of assembly it will not fit together at all. Oh and Battlesuit feet are annoying as all hell.
Also just a helpful tip for OP, when you get around to the Ghost Ark, make sure you paint it before final assembly. Speaking from experience.

thekerrick wrote:Besides the old metal Hive Tyrant, the hardest plastic model I put together ever was the Skitarii Dragoon. They have you gluing individual tubing into the legs. Its a lesson in futility. Tweezers and gel control glue got me through that. Oh I almost forgot! The D thirster axe absolutely DOES NOT FIT with the arms and its a known problem. That was a nightmare.
But yes, GW kits can get complicated and hard. The necrons are about middle of the road difficulty. Most of the older kits are easier (some exceptions) but the newer kits tend to have much more small parts. You will learn the small tricks to get through it and will get better.
Keep at it! I suggest tweezers sometimes. Always dry fit parts first as well. One thing i learned to do is shave off inside plastics. Meaning you can trim plastic down if its not a part that will be seen to make parts fit.
Please never remind me again of the old metal hive tyrant, i was so excited to get that box and didn't know it was metal until i opened it.
12 year old me did all he could think of, i never managed it

This, all over.
The old Tau broadsides with Metal railguns on their shoulders that not only made them top heavy but moved their center of mass out away from the base were an absolute 'mare. Especially all that weight on those tiny ankles! When I bought 4 when they first came out I was positive GW were just trolling hobbyists.
That and years ago when I had three Pentitent engines and after the traumatic experience of building the first I sold the other two because as a kid I just felt like I couldn't build the other two if I could even be bothered.

Wost model to assemble ever still goes to the king the old metal lord of change.
GW designer: new chaos model, this thing is 5 pounds of metal
2nd GW designer: you know what would make it even better, put it's only base contact point as it's ankle
GW designer: (weeps) it's so evil and I'm so proud
Fast forward to every person to ever buy that model throwing it against a wall at least once.

The old metal models were absolute nightmares to put together. Sure. you could use a pin vise, but dremmels were waaaay better. I remember the metal land speeder... it was an excellent paper weight.

I had a similar issue with the 4th edition metal Bloodcrushers.
Did you know that with a slight casting error, the only point of contact the thing had with the base was *one ankle*? And the thing has almost as much metal in it as a LoC of the time. I tried converting a Skulltaker (also metal) on top of it. The Laws of Physics and my inability to pin the damn thing is the reason why that never happened.

SneakyTheDragon wrote:Today I received my "Start Collecting" box of Necrons. The infantry and scarabs were quite easy to assemble. (Except matching up the arms to guns on the warriors. x.x ) However, the Triarch Stalker was such a pain to put together. It felt like some of the instructions for putting the cockpit and pilot together were in reverse order. I struggled to get the pilot in his seat and then attach the seat to the cockpit. Finally when the seat fell out entirely, I just glued the pilot to it and slid the seat into the cockpit. 100% easier.
I also managed to glue a couple of small pieces to my fingers. It feels like these kits are made for people with fingers more deft than mine.
Are all of the vehicle kits hard to put together? Or was this just a special case? For example the Monolith looks fairly simple, but the Ghost Ark looks complicated as heck. Anyone have experience with these?
some of the old ones require much fiddling, force and hope to get together (rhino n land raider I'm looking at you) On the hole gw kits are a breeze.
Also I'd recommend not using super glue on a plastic kits, then stuff won't get stuck to your fingers, unless you really need to tack, supplement a bond or mix media. I can't think of any examples but I'm sure I've had plenty of situations were the instructions felt backwards for certain sections.

For me it was the Monolith. The damn thing never seemed to align properly, always wound up with horrendous gaps and promptly fell apart when the slightest amount of pressure was applied to the sides.
