Subject: Egyptian Tank crew thwarts car bomb attack.
Seven civilians were killed after a bomb exploded at a security checkpoint in North Sinai on July 24, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.
The military released a video of the attack south of al-Arish, which shows an army tank intercepting a vehicle as it approached the checkpoint. The tank drove over the vehicle, which reportedly contained four gunmen and 100kg of explosives, in an attempt to contain the blast, the military said.
The video shows the car exploding moments after being driven over. Among the dead were two children, three men and two women, the military said.
The government said the actions of the tank drivers thwarted a major terrorist operation that had the potential to kill 50 people. Credit: Egyptian Ministry of Defense via Storyful
Pretty ballzy move on that tank crew's part. 7 people were still killed, but it could have been much higher if they hadn't smooshed the car beforehand. And they are sooooo lucky it didn't go off while they were on top.

Tragic that there were still people close enough to the blast to be killed. I think you see one person approaching from the field on the right hand side of the screen right before the blast goes off. :(
Gotta say, that was an incredibly brave move on the tank crew's part.

Random question, and not a criticism on the tank crew at all:
Could crushing the car make it denser and the shrapnel from the explosion more severe?
It was a quick way of immobilizing the vehicle, and I wonder if there may have been hope that the action might disable a cellphone or other remote trigger of any suspected explosive device.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios
Maybe, but given the distance the people who got killed were at it likely didn't matter. Though the time that elapsed should have been sufficient for everybody to run. Sadly it seems like the people who got killed looked like they thought the danger was over and didn't leave, like the ones in that blue car. Plus that one guy who actually got closer from the field on the right.
Everybody should have kept running till they were at a very safe distance. The fact that the tank and the other army vehicles were backing off should have been a warning.

Why did they not run when the tank and others backed off, and the MRAP also was backing up.
They where sat or stood in the car...
Just because guy been ran over by a tank foes not mean the bomb is not there. Or could explode at any time.

Sadly that's not how people work. People are curious, or want to help, or think there's loot so they go closer. It's not that long ago they had a tanker truck crash in Pakistan where locals ran up to it in order to collect spilling fuel, with the result that 153 died when it caught fire and exploded.
Seven dead is regrettable, but it could have been much worse if those guys had been let through and went to explode in a market place, outside a mosque or other place people move in masses.

It wasn't the shrapnel that killed those people, it was the pressure wave of that explosion. That was a huge bomb. The lethal radius of it was quite large.

Apparently the plan was to have gunman jump out and shoot people while the driver drove the car forward to detonate it so not only did they stop the explosion but kept soldiers and civilians from being shot as well.

I have actually seen a video of a US M1 driving over a car bomb on purpose before... you REALLY have to trust your armor to do something like that lol.

I suspect there is a quiet satisfaction in slowly crushing four bomb-wielding terrorists to pulpy death.

I looked, can't find a video online.
When I first went Army support, I attended a school where one of the instructers was a Tanker. He showed us a video of his M1 hitting an IED of four 500lb bombs. It literally lifted the 72 ton tank several feet off the ground. The blast didn't penetrate the armor, but most of the crew was still injured. He suffered a severe laceration to his army, that separated most of the bicep muscle from the bone.
Abrams are simply amazing pieces of engineering.

I saw the video on facebook a while back, and the bomb was definitely not 500lb. The M1 drove over it and the was kind of a "BOOF" out from underneath it, and that was it. Tank didn't even move. It was definitely a much smaller IED, maybe a little larger than a hand grenade.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Found it: ...and now that I've found it... that was definitely bigger than a hand grenade lol.
