Hi Dakka,

Rather than clog up the forum with various threads of my sub-standard miniatures, I thought I'd have just one thread of my sub-standard miniatures!

Posts will follow with images shortly!

Thanks for taking the time to view. Comments and criticism welcome!

Okay so to shamelessly promote another build thread I did on last year's AOP, if you want to have a gander as some Necrons and a display board, the thread can be found here:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/699619.page

The finished product is below for those not wishing to trawl through a build thread!

Another recent model is the Primaris Leuitenant I did for a local GW Store painting comp.

He took 2nd place. Apparently the lack of transfers on the pauldrons really hurt my votes, so I've taken that feedback away with me for next time

Whilst I'm here I thought I'd throw up some images of earlier models I've painted.

Old school Bloodthirster:

Necron Overlord:

Blood Angel Chaplain:

Space Marine Captain:

Latest project is another last-minute dash for an AOP entry.

This time I'm going for a more lush grassland/waterfall kind of thing. there is no set plan, so it seems to evolve as I go.

It begins:

Structure added:

Basic formation:

Shaping:

Sand:

Excess removed:

Base Coat:

Turns out spray paint melts polystyrene!

Repair work:

That's it for now. Will give it another blast of black spray over the weekend and then start on throwing some colours down!

Thanks for reading!

Little update on the display board. Progress has slowed due to a combination of laziness and life just getting in the way. I will admit that the former is more to blame than the latter.

The rocks have some colour:

This is the bit where (I think) the board goes from looking like a heap of rubbish, to suddenly not that bad looking. I'm using my phone camera for this, so please forgive the images. I know it gets said a lot, but it really does look much better in person!

Rocks (almost) finished and earth painted:

Start of the water:

More shading:

Final rock highlight:

Now onto the fun bit, the water.

I've only ever used water products once, so this is a learning curve for me. Due to the not-very-flat nature of my water features on this board, my plan is to do the pours in stages. I started by throwing a layer of Vallejo Still water down on the top and bottom pools.

After seeing this pool quite nicely (admittedly a little thick on the bottom pool), I went on to put a very thin layer on the rest of the river:

Once I've gotten this all dried, I'll get a proper form made up and then have a go as pouring some resin on top. This may go horribly wrong, but I'm hoping if I do it in stages and then blend in the lines with Water Effects (hoping some rapids will do the trick) then it shouldn't be too noticeable.

I'll report back when the resin arrives and I've done the first pour. Wish me luck!

Evening Dakka

Another little update on the board. Progress has been slow (standard) but it's getting there!

So the Vallejo Still Water was applied way too thick on the bottom pool and cracked. It looked okay so I decided to plough on and get the resin poured.

Due to the odd shape of my board, I made some little silicone dams to hold the resin at a better level:

Dams shaped and cracked pool:

Resin kit ready to go:

All mixed:

First pour done:

Shiny!

The pool begins to turn white:

As it stands now:

When I first saw this, I had a minor freak out, but then realised that I'm going to have a waterfall cascasing onto the pool. Waterfalls make a lot of swarf, which usually looks white. I think I can save this!

Waterfall in progress (I actually made 2 of these):

Off the sheet:

Both falls attached together:

At this point, the falls hide a lot of the cracking. my plan is to create some more texture using the clear silicone again to further hide the cracking. I'll post updates as I go Currently the fall is drying and i just hope it's still stuck there when i check it tomorrow!

As for the method for this fall, all credit goes to Lukes APS on youtube. The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymYuR9R76eg

thanks for taking the time to read

Thanks man, appreciate the comment

So I managed to get a bit more done on the board this weekend and I think I'm in a good place with it now. We had a BBQ, so that ate up a fair bit of the weekend and today has been recovery!

Waterfall bottom pool finished, or at least as good as I think I'll get it:

PVA begins for the flock:

The flock I'm using for this is the bottom pot, which is a 75/25 mixture of the static grass on the top left and the top right:

Flock added:

Tiny bit of the darker scatter sprinkled around:

Excess removed:

With flowers/tufts added:

Now I'd like to wheel out the old excuse that this looks better in person than in the photos, so I will. The green is a lot less bright/harsh and the tufts blend in better in person. I've got to do some further work to it, but I like where it's heading for now.

Thank you for reading

Hi guys, me again!

I've had a bit of a mad few weeks, so progress has dropped off slightly.

Personally I think it's my subconscious trying to give me an excuse not to finish before Armies On Parade

Okay so The board itself is pretty much finished. I think if I added anything else, it would start to look a bit too busy. I may add some trees if I feel there is too much blank space once I've gotten the models done, but that it going to be a very last-minute addition as I really need to crack on with the models themselves now!

In other news, the bottom pool has started to dry out, which I personally prefer to the solid white from a week ago.

It's subtle, but I've done some very minor drybrushing of the rapid by the rock. Another technique stolen from Youtube videos:

So in an effort to avoid painting any models, I've done the last thing I can before I finally have to put brush to miniature. Their bases.

These were done in the same style as the sand/rock on the main board, so I won't detail the process again.

I will however give a few images of the process just to fill up this post

Bases on the board (don't worry, not their final positions!):

I'm going to paint the rims a different colour, but haven't fully decided. I was thinking either a tan or possibly bone colour. I ALWAYS paint my rims black, so the concept of another colour is making me uneasy

A WIP of the Wraithknight base. It is now finished but I forgot to take an image :(

Next up is to decide on the colours for the models. As you can see in the last 2 images, I'm going for an Iyanden style yellow (always been my fave) but am thinking of swapping out the blue with red. I may still go for the blue, but any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks for reading

Had a quick test setup of the models now they're on their bases (minus the Wraithknight) and I think I'll need to add another squad on the top right to balance it out.

My plan is for an "all wraith" build, so might have to finished the counts-as warp spiders sooner than intended.

Thanks for reading guys!

That looks bloody great. Glad the white at the bottom of the fall worked out well.

Okay, slight change of direction! Turns out my local GW are having a painting comp on 9th Sep.

The idea is to paint a Primaris marine in a scheme of your own design, write some fluff and then on comp day the winning entry then becomes the store mascot. Pretty cool!

As this gives me not a huge amount of time, the AOP entry is on hold.

Started off with a base that Elbows will approve of:

Sand and base detail added:

Basecoat and wash done on the marine:

The plan is to go with a yellow scheme (I do love yellow!) With blue accents as these are the colours of our town.

I'm going to have a go at freehanding something (not sure what) on the pauldrons to jazz it up a bit.

Time to get cracking!

Thanks for reading.

Aaaaaaaan he's done. Or at least as done as I can make him for now.

I didn't take any "in progress" images (which is very unlike me!) so I hope you enjoy the below finished product

Please ignore the blob of PVA under his foot. That has now dried clear

My attempt at freehand. I could only manage a (wonky) letter!

Solid looking Marine, in a difficult color scheme. Sweet base. And that waterfall display is fantastic, by the way.

I think it's because I've always struggled with it, so it's nice to finally be able to paint something half-decent yellow!

Hi all,

After a very long break from posting, I finally managed to get my entry finished for the AOP weekend just gone.

A few pics of the board and models:

I won best board, but nothing else. I'm happy with the result as there were some other truly fantastic entries on the day.

I've learned that for 2018 I will have to spend more time on the models as what I put out wasn't in the same league as some of the other entries! the joys of leaving it until the last minute!

Thanks for reading all! onto the next project!
