New Space Marine codex states that Named Characters MUST be given the specific Warlord Traits.

So does that mean they can't choose the default 3 or the other 6 in the Codex?

I know this question seems pretty obvious, but confirmation from others would be nice, not to mention it spreads the information.

Yup, Got the codex in front of me, If you're using a named Char (Vulkan He'stan for eg) as your warlord, he can only select from the chapter warlord traits.

Non-named Char warlords can pic from the "Normal" traits in the book. *OR* the chapter specific ones if they belong to said chapter.

Yeah no more Generic Traits for special SM characters it seems.

However, there's no restriction on who is your warlord, right? For example, I can take Shrike, but make my shooty captain my warlord for Storm of Fire, if desired?

No restriction whatsoever. You can make it a Random Conscript for all the game cares. If you want a warlord trait it has to be a character though, or an Adeptus Astartes Character for a SM Codex trait.
