I fell victim to all that 8th edition hype and impulse bought me some space marine.
Guided just by my love for models I bought me 3 terminator squad and 4 scout squad andIi plan to paint them sometimes in September if I manage to decide on the colour scheme, I already settlled on the Rainbow Warriors, but the plain blue is boring
.
Anyhow, to round up the list to 75 PP I wanted to buy a couple of tanks, and look around for whirlwinds, but new model are basically impossible to find.
I considered buying rhinos and get the turret separatly, but 3rd party resin models are quie expensive, I have considered the Aiolos Missile Launcher turret from forgeworld which is quite cheap, buit I do not love the rounded edges, I wanted to go for the boxy look.
The alternative was settling for an hunter/icarus and a razorback. I do not dislike the models, but the whirlwind has the charme of the big missiles.

Unfortunately the Whirlwind is basically a "legacy" item now, the rules in the codex solely so people who used to have them can still use them. They have been underwhelming and basically useless on the tabletop since 3rd edition.
Considering it has been direct from GW only for a long time and now is actually impossible to buy online, you're going to have to use alternative sources like ebay, which even then there doesn't seem to be any on.

Don't listen to the catbug, the whirlwind isn't a legacy item- Direct only is mainly stuff which doesn't sell in high enough volume so it's pulled from the shelves to make way for stuff that does.
You'll have to order one through GW's site, but you'll get the bitz to make a rhino out of it, so if you're good at using magnets, you'll be able to switch back and forth.
That being said, I love the whirlwind- it's been my favourite space marine tank since the original Dawn of War video game. Considering it doesn't need line of sight at all to fire on anything (and received a range boost from 7th to 8th! 48" up to 72"!) it's a pretty decent choice to soften up units sitting at the back.

It is temp out of stock from direct, give it some time and it wil be back.
if an item/model is not in the codex, you use the latest source where it is, aka the index.

I looked at the resin stuff, but it is all a bit small in respect to the original.
Soneone has a good idea on how to convert the Hunter turret?

You could also buy Whirlwind Scorpius from Forgewold:
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-JP/Legion-Deimos-Pattern-Whirlwind-Scorpius
It looks better than normal whirlwind and is actually quite efficient little tank on table top, not the best antihorde, but what is??!
Check that out.

There are literally tons of 3rd parties that make different turrets, you can probably find something you like if you search hard enough. Most of them aren't very expensive, you'd pay the same getting an actual Whirlwind turret second hand off ebay if you could find one.
One idea though is to convert the missile pods from a Land Speed Typhoon. They're smaller but you could always bulk them out with something or add 4 of them instead. Or try and pick up the missile pods from a Valkyrie kit if you can find them on ebay. They'd look cool and I think should be bigger.

I've had a plasma turret from bits pudlo and it was great quality was happy to pay £12 instead of £55 to forgeworld, and delivery was surprisingly quick.
Need to order some of their conversion beamers.

I’d likely buy a rhino and go 3rd party for the turret; the GW one looks like a pair of tiny crayon boxes with 2 wax crayons on each side. Fitting, as the whirlwind seems like it would hit about as hard as a bombardment of Crayola.

It's got two missile versions for the model so you don't have to use the crayons. The alternate basically looks like the FW emplacement one.
