So, it's been a while since I've played(5th). I see mentionings of conscripts with chaos armies. What is? I don't see them in the index/codex. How do they work?

Forge world army Renegades and heretics, renegade militia most likely. Forge world sells it's own book on it's website.

What makes them worth taking? Why are they so popular?

They are meatshields. They bubblewrap your expensive stuff for a tiny cost, making them immune to deep strikers.

dunno about the chaos versions but the IG version is extremely cheap for what they do. For one they can accept orders like any other IG infantry while coming in units of 50 (thus one order affects more models) for less points. Their low LD is also countered by them also being affected by the Commissar, who effectively turns them fearless for the cost of a wound or two (again, extremely cheap wounds at that).

Also due to the system revamp where anything can hurt anything, just on 6's, the diddly their flashlights use to do now dun doodly anything that they look at due to the sheer volume of fire. And good luck trying to wipe the entire unit considering templates no longer exist and high volume of fire weapons come at a premium.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I noticed that templates have gone away, when did that happen? I usually use heavy flamer on my terminator and defiler, plus his battle cannon.

They were removed, presumably to speed up the game. Now flamer weapons typically get D6 shots.

Removed in 8th, no longer are players forced to meticulously space out their models 2" from each other and argue over the exact angle of the scatter die, or if you moved the blast marker 0.1" too far to clip the rear armour of your Wave Serpent.

Overall I'm okay with removing the templates.

Yeah, it definitely speeds things up. Not sure they're quite as effective now as they should be against big units; wouldn't be averse to them all having a rule like the demolisher cannon where they do more hits on bigger units

That's the biggest trade-off. Also, I don't like that blast weapons now scale directly with Ballistic Skill while previously they were commonly used to mitigate bad BS. Looking at the battlecannon big blast to D6 you think "oh that's basically balanced" and then you realize it's D6/2 on average....

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I´m glad that they removed the templates. It took my opponents so much time placing their units. And then a small template was one hit and the large 3.

But also granted everything that had used templates is now quite low on shots besides the flamer. All of them should be also auto hitting.

And also it saves having to micro-manage positioning of models. Previously you had players spreading their units into conga lines for fear of template weapons. Now we can play safe in the knowledge that we will not be penalised just for deploying our units in a particular way.

Now people are creating conga lines to avoid LOS and exploit the concept of "within x inches"

Blast weapons are generally pointed accordingly though. The leman russ battle cannon only costs 22 points, which is barely more than lascannon.
