Pretty much as title says. Avoid for the time being, since who know what kind of scripts might be running there.

I saw that, too. Looks like they're threatening to wipe the site?

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I'm getting a 403 Forbidden when I go to both sites.

Are those sites owned/operated by the same group or hosted on the same company?

Yes. A WHOIS lookup shows that the Lexicanum domain is registered by Lauro Vela of BoLS Interactive LLC.

I hope they have a good backup. Lexicanum seems to list sources more often than similar 40k sites.

The Lex became part of the BoLS network some years ago.

Well, that attack was a nasty surprise last night.

Welp - there goes a whole bunch of my work down the drain...

That said, Lex *should* have back-ups of one form or another owing to the fact that it keeps records of each and every revision to an article since it's creation. Whether or not these revisions are stored separately to the article itself I don't know - lets hope they are.

BOLS is back up, although the forums and other stuff is still inoperative. Lexicanum is still wiped as far as I can tell.

That really sucks for those who put the time and effort into both sites. I may rib BOLS occasionally as my favorite site for slightly stale click bait news but no one deserves to have their hard work held for ranson (both the owners and the contributors) and I use both sites as occasional resources.

Also don't forget that some hackers treat it like a job; hack enough sites and hold them to ransom and hope that one or two pay out to get their data restored.

Other people just want to do it because its the internet and its rather like pulling wings of flies - its not "real" and no one that matters is harmed.

Others might have had a falling out with the mods and instead of slinking off to another site got all riled up and decided to take out justice by hacking.

There's loads of reasons why. It's sad that it happens, but good that the site is restored and data hasn't been lost.

Fething hell! I was on that site the other day.

They are on the web, so they obviously (to a hacker's mind) are there to make money.
Unless the sites are kept patched and protected quickly enough after every exploit is found, they are a back-door into the datacentre or server farm they are hosted on. That is the main aim of a lot of these attacks, not the site they hack, but the juicy databases behind them.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

So they're back up, but is there any "official" indication the sites are secure and back under the control of the owners?

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Hmm, were both sites run off of Wordpress? I know BOLS was, or at least their Gamewire site was. I was running my sites all off of Wordpress for a while, and I would get hack attempts all the time. So many sites use it, so I think there's lots of bots and hackers that target wordpress sites.
