Oddly enough I joined Warhammer the opposite way most people do, where most people learn about the lore before hand, think it's cool and eventually learn so much they get pieces.
I played at a convention test demo, and then picked up pieces because the game was freaking fun.
So the lore itself is freaking cool to me, but I know very little of it!
So I'm making this sort of General Lore thread to learn about stuff!
What I'm going to do is since I have insomnia every night I shall post some kind of challenge/request for other more informed people to post below, you get a point for every credible piece of lore you post each night. After each week I shall post a list of who has the most points.
Because Skinner boxes always work.
What are the points for? What do you win?
Nothing I guess?
But bragging rights and I guess I'll give a top five list for whom has the most points.
I like to learn and there is a lot to learn in the 40k universe, so spread the wealth.
I have the faintest idea this is going to either work wonderfully and I shall start a new thing, or have 0 replies haha
So tonights challenge for the first day
Day 1:
Post information about a single primarch.
Rules: One primarch per person, Though you can add on to other peoples, and once a Primarch is used it can't be used again.
(Fingers Crossed this ends well)
Day 2: Discuss a specific chapter of space marines you like, and the things they specialize about them, any information in general you could give would be great!
-Also, a bonus point if your chapter is past the second founding
Day 3: Explain to me some of the equipment in 40k? Like how does a Rosarius even work? What do Bolt Rifles fire? Maybe what even is an Iron Halo? No limitations on how much equipment you can discuss!
-Bonus points for every additional piece you discuss!

Konrad Curze
Suffered from split personality (among other mental disorders that worsened as time went by) and traumatizing prophetic visions of the future. He landed on a world of perpetual night where the local populace was entirely morally questionable. Konrad's sense of justice turned him into the 'Night Haunter', a vigilante like batman but who would instead kill you horrifically and display your body publicly as a warning to other criminals. After many years he had turned society around through fear, into something resembling law and order.
When the Emperor found him he was put in charge of the Night Lords who made extensive use of terror tactics to subjugate populations and prevent rebellion. Unfortunately without his presence, his home world of Nostromo fell back into its evil ways of the past which began to 'poison' his legion with recruits who were criminals at best and horrific murderers at worst. In the end his legion was censured for its violence, which caused Curze to destroy his home planet for their crimes.
In the end after siding with Horus during the Horus Heresy, he let an Assassin sent by the Emperor kill him. These were his last words -
"Your presence does not surprise me, Assassin. I have known of you ever since your craft entered the Eastern Fringes. Why did I not have you killed? Because your mission and the act you are about to commit proves the truth of all I have ever said or done. I merely punished those who had wronged, just as your false Emperor now seeks to punish me. Death is nothing compared to vindication."

Awesome!
See I am currently more of a filthy Xeno and heretical type player so I don't know a lot about the Primarchs, and Conrad isn't one of the ones that people very openly talk about in my knowledge (Though a friend of mine plays Carcharodons and it's hinted they might be a decedent chapter if I am correct so he may know more about him.)
But yeah! Thanks for informing me!
He sounds rather interesting? Is there any literature specifically on him?

Whilst Carcharadons might be descendant from the Night Lords, I personally believe they're Raven Guard successors but I digress.
I'm an Imperial Guard main yet I decided to start a small Night Lords force (I've read most Black Library books and never could relate to Space Marines until the Night Lords books. They're written amazingly well.)
I find him to be one of the more tragic Primarchs, along with Angron, because he was constantly at war with his own psyche - he had a sense of honour and justice and brutally murdered anyone he found guilty yet was extremely self-destructive and hated himself for his actions, however necessary he believed them to be.

Oddly enough I myself have some Imperial Guard creeping around my home somewhere, but well they have fallen by the wayside since I started getting into the Death Guard.
An about the Raven Guard\Night lord thing, I have people who will honest to God fist fight you over the Carcharodons primarch in a dispute.

You like the Lore?
Then you owe yourself to read some of the books, especially the HH series. Points, no matter how detailed, just can't do the story justice....
First Heretic, Fulgrim, Thousand Sons....These stories has some significant details that makes the whole 40k world very interesting

True, I plan to!
But this place is for a fun game I enjoy a bit! It may bring all the lore nerds together! or have one guy teaching me throughout the whole thing, there is that.
Either way, if you want to take part you can! I encourage it!

I'd highly recommend reading any of Aaron Dembski-Bowden's works, wether they be HH, legion wars or current timeline. One of my absolute favorites is Talon of Horus which delves into the tail end of the legion wars in the eye of terror and explains the birth of the black legion. I haven't got to read the new one fro, that series that just came out, Black legion, but I'm certain it's just as good! He also wrote the script for the fan short cgi film The Lord Inquisitor! Totally recommend checking that out as well!

So far I am enjoying all the replies and recommendations! I have a reading list to pick up for books, and a bit of a budget to pick up said books heh. So I intend to look around and buy some from the Black Library soon! (hard Cover and Audio mostly)
But I think considering it's 3:40 AM right now, I would declare it's late at night? So it's time to expand on some more lore! Today's challenge was brought about because I just went out and got a friend of mine his first marines and he picked an obscure as all hell chapter to go with for his chapter (Mainly because he liked Troll Slayer Orange and he wanted a faction to fit that) So we ended up going with Tiger Claws!
So Today's Lore question challenge thing
Day 2: Discuss a specific chapter of space marines you like, and the things they specialize about them, any information in general you could give would be great!
-Also, a bonus point if your chapter is past the second founding

The Raptors are a descendant of the ravenguard, and are masters of stealth, even camouflaging and repainting their amour, something no other chapter does for some reason...
Anyway, they alos specialise in guerrilla warfare amongst other things, basically spacemarine SAS
they might also be originally founded from the enhanced marines corvus corax, primarch of the ravenguard made.
their chapter master is lias issodon who has a sweet custom bolter, a master of infiltration, and is an allround badass
not beyond second founding tho :(

Check out the Marines Malevolent. It's a chapter of the biggest donkey-caves In the entire Imperium. It's best if you read about them yourself...
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Marines_Malevolent
1d4chan is a great site if you want a laugh while you read about the fluff, or if you just want an alternate view point on the subject. (Although it's probably not the best for educational purposes)

I am familiar with them hehe.
I sadly don't know much about them,
Other than the exploits of Commisar Fuklaw.
So expand upon them! (Tis the purpose of the game afterall haha)

Welp, who would have thought we would have gotten to a day three with semi-consistent posting?
(Not gonna lie, I am genuinely intrigued by a few of the Chapters discussed! Raptors mostly.)
So?
Look at the time? 1:25 AM? That sounds pretty late to me!
So on to day three!
This one was inspired by what me and a friend were doing all day! In which we were building his guys (new Marine player) and it got me to thinking about what specifics were there to the equipment they were using?
So that is today's question?
Day 3: Explain to me some of the equipment in 40k? Like how does a Rosarius even work? What do Bolt Rifles fire? Maybe what even is an Iron Halo? No limitations on how much equipment you can discuss!
-Bonus points for every additional piece you discuss!

Bolters -
Bolters are large (.75 cal) calibre gyrojet weaponry where the projectile is rocket assisted and can accelerate to speeds greater than normal bullets. Where Bolters differ from gyrojet weaponry is in size and the fact they have explosive tips (they have other bolt types too for different targets).
Gyrojet Weaponry:
http://i.imgur.com/tD4zm7e.gif (Visual)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrojet (Information)
Good Bolter Link:
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Bolter
Whilst not as efficient as Las Weapons or as powerful as Plasma Weapons, Bolters are a good middle ground with stopping power, penetration and reliability.
There are many Bolt Weapons in the 40k Universe which range from the simple Bolt Pistol used by Commissars for messy executions up to Vulcan Megabolters on Warhound Titans designed to decimate infantry formations and wreck light vehicles.
There are specialized ammunition types for certain targets such as Kraken rounds for Armour Piercing or Hellfire rounds containing mutagenic acid.
