I had some metallica skitarii and I was holding out hope that maybe they'd get something to make them more elite, maybe give the onagers some punch (my army is basically just a bunch of start collecting boxes)

You can imagine my disappointment when I found out the Metallica trait literally just wants you to spam infantry as screens that can fall back and shoot if they're near their warlord and get to advance and fire their Assault and Rapid Fire weapons.

I play infantry IG! I literally already have all of those abilities for far cheaper and honestly with more durability! Why do you taunt me GW? I just wanted to make a ton of Metallica puns and yet you give me the one Admech trait that doesn't help my army in any way whatsoever

'I've played Guard for years, and the best piece of advice is to always utilize the Guard's best special rule: "we roll more dice than you" ' - stormleader

But aren't rules based on what the models look like (IIRC)? Creating rules for a model first, and dictating to the model team what to make based on those rules would be seriously out of character for GW.

Frankly it should be art and fluff as top priority, minis to match the faction vision then rules.

Mini first is how we get things like the Stormsurge debacle.

You're just pissed that you lost the Doctrina thingies. Who knows what's going to replace them in the Codex. You don't, so stop jumping the gun.

Well it's 8th Ed 40K, so it will have an aura. Everything has a fething aura. The whole game is devoted to characters with auras. It's mind numbing.

Well yeah, it's the replacement for characters being able to join units. Every character has an aura instead to make them useful to nearby units. I don't see why it's a problem.

I'm inclined to agree. Fluff/art > model > rules, as long as there's collaboration between the rules and fluff writing teams to write rules based on the model and the fluff, not just the model.

Well, strictly speaking it makes single faction Deathstarring worse because you can clump multiple units around buff auras to create a super-buffed unit clump.

Admittedly multi-faction deathstars don't work anymore, but that's based off tags, not ability to join or not join units.

No, he's saying they don't want to write rules before there's a model. Basically you'll get rules for a Skitarii HQ when a model is released, and who know when that'll be. Based on this comment it likely won't be something as simple as a Skitarii Alpha Prime.

If by "back in the day", you mean "the codex that Skitarii got in 7th edition"--yes. That's definitely the case.
That was the whole schtick they had with no HQs. Their HQ was in orbit.

However, the Codex also makes mention of Cohort Commanders. There's even a fluff blurb about a Cohort Commander who defends a Forge World from a Tyranid invasion by letting combustible gases into the air and then having the Onagers under his command light the atmosphere on fire to stop the spore pods raining down.

technically there's also secutor that study tactics the way mayos biologis study biology or legio cybernetica studies bionics and robots. Seeing as this is a war game I really question their absence.

Secutors are members of the Auxilia Myrmidon of the Adeptus Mechanicus that devote themselves to the art of warfare with a fervour other tech-priests normally reserve for tinkering with ancient technology. To them, the protection of the technological mysteries of the Machine Cult, from those who would misuse them, is a far greater concern than anything else, including human lives and the other concerns of the Mechanicus.[1a]

Huge creatures of steel, bedecked in powerful and sometimes ancient weaponry, they embody the military potential of the Mechanicus in the arts of siege warfare, destruction and death. Secutors often have extensive martial enhancements such as pistol-armed mechadendrites, brutal close combat weapons and the special machinator array that vastly enhances their bulk, armours up their internal organs and increases the ability for weapon systems to interface with their implants. A primary example is the Auxilia Myrmidon, a defense force of tech-priests traveling with technological crusades of the Mechanicus to protect their holdings on the worlds they settle. Another example is the Divine Light of Sollex, a cult of martial tech-priests unique to the Calixis Sector.[1a]

Yes, but that was just bs made up in order to sell you two codices for one army.

Is the techpriest enginseer an HQ choice instead of elite now? Does anyone know if he still has the Astra Militarum keyword as well? That's going to mess with my Guard list if he's changed, I won't be able to fit everything into a battalion any more!

Edit: Actually, that's even more annoying than I realised - the Ad Mech codex will presumably replace the index, so it means I'll have to get it just for that one character!

How did "your HQ is in orbit and does not need to be represented on the field" equate to "sell you two codices for one army"?

I never felt disadvantaged from playing pure Skitarii because of the "bs made up in order to sell you two codices for one army".
I had my own Detachment/Formations that didn't require an HQ, so that was never an issue.
My Skitarii Alphas could be my army's Warlord, so that was never an issue.

I legitimately feel like this argument only ever comes from the die-hard Cult Mechanicus players and is quite frankly why we're stuck in this situation where Skitarii players got boned because Cult/War Convocation players complained loudly about "having to buy three codices for one army".

The Techpriest Enginseer is, per the Warhammer facebook guys, going to become an HQ choice.

We don't know if he'll retain the Astra Militarum keyword as well or how things will work out beyond that. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a reappearance when the Guard book gets released though.

It'll be like demons and CSM book though I imagine, any changes like that will get a FAQ if it applies to every version. It may be we effectively get two versions of the tech priest, one for guard and one for admech.
